I could live without the home run derby, but it's obviously a fun exhibition and good for the fans. I just heard that this year it's going global. 8 players from 8 countries compete for their country. ??? Why? I don't see the point. Why mess with it?

I like watching it just because there is always one guy who flips out and hits 10 500 foot bombs in a row.

I'm assuming this country representation thing is just to promote the World Baseball Classic next year, right?

Yeah, they're using the absurd to promote the absurd.

I just saw a commercial for it on ESPNNews. I didn't catch them all, but I did see Tejada, Abreu, and Jason Bay. Seriously, Jason Bay is a good player, but just because Larry Walker is old and Canada no longer sports a premier hitter doesn't mean he should get in just for the token canadian factor.

Tejada is great, but one entry from the Dominican just ruled out some incredibly entertaining bats. I know it doesn't matter, but it's a lot of fun and this has made it far less entertaining.

Well, Lee is the Major League leader in home runs for Americans so I would hope he is the representitive.

Who cares! Bud Selig is a nut who is always looking to add twists to the game. He's proposing that next year during Interleague play, the pitcher hit in AL parks, and there be a DH in NL parks.

Andruw Jones isn't American. He was born in Curacao.

I think Bay ends up actually being an All Star, though. Seriously, who else do the Pirates have?

As for the possibilities for each candidate...

Canada: Jason Bay (Conf.)

Dominican Republic: Miguel Tejada (Conf.)

Venezuela - Bobby Abreu (Conf.)

Curacao/Netherlands - Andruw Jones

Japan - Hideki Matsui

USA - Derrek Lee

Panama - Carlos Lee

Puerto Rico - Carlos Delgado

Kinda stinks that a bunch of guys who'd be fun to watch in this contest will be snubbed. Matsui's a questionable candidate, but knowing MLB, they'll be doing everything they can to pimp this freakin' thing internationally...

If the "Homerun Derby" for some reason just happened to be on at the same time as the NBA's "Slam Dunk Contest", I'd probably watch something on the Home and Garden Network.

Both contests are old, boring and unfresh, regardless of the little twists they try to add to it. But if I were forced to watch one, it would [unfortunately] be the Slam Dunk Contest, simply because I wouldn't have to listen to that obnoxious Chris Berman guy. He really sucks, IMO, and he takes his suckiness up a notch for that contest. I mean, as another poster so eloquently stated: "What does hitting the ball over the fence when someone lobs it up there mean anyway?"
