A couple weeks into the season I made a bet with my moron friend that Pujols would finish with a higher batting average, considering the huge advantage Pujols held over Lee career wise. Of course I didn't forsee Lee staying so hot and now I feel like the moron

Make a bet that the cubs will lose every game from here on out, plz.

Here we are, and it has been over a month since my last post on this thread. D. Lee has been tailing off.

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG
A Pujols 99 375 80 126 24 0 27 79 231 51 40 9 0 .423 .616 .336
D Lee 98 373 81 137 31 2 32 82 268 51 65 12 2 .445 .718 .367

Judge for yourself where they stand right now.

Look at the walks...., very interesting

If Lee turned the 25 extra K's he has into balls in play, about 9 of them would fall in for hits (theoretically speaking, anyway). This would make his average .391, instead of .367.

That's Brenly-speak IMB, I didn't expect that from you.

2 months left and D-Lee is still en flambo Pujols has some nagging foot and shoulder injuries, and w/ the Cards running away w/ the division, LaRussa will rest him down the strecth to keep him fresh for the post-season.

Here's the latest. I would call this a dead heat.

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG
Pujols 130 485 105 162 31 1 35 99 300 74 52 11 2 0.428 0.619 0.334
Lee 127 481 103 168 42 2 39 94 331 69 82 15 3 0.432 0.688 0.349

69 points of slugging is quite a difference between the two. Ignoring team-reliant stats (RBI), Lee has more hits, more doubles, more triples, more HR, more TB. Add in the fact that he's a better defender and I think it's easy to say that Lee has clearly been the better player up to this point in 2005.

However, Pujols will get the MVP because:

1) He's earned it in past years by being the best non-Bonds player on the planet

2) He's playing for a winning team

I hate that silly line of reasoning. Tim Krzikstan said something to the effect of "Pujols has to win the MVP this year because he didn't the past couple years." That's as insane as Joe Morgan saying Roger Clemens has pitched better than anybody in baseball but he shouldn't win the Cy because his teammates don't score enough runs for him. It's not a lifetime achievement award. If you want to give it to Pujols you are more than justified in doing so, but don't make up silly stuff like that voters.

I agree. Last year, or any other previous year should have absolutely no bearing on this season's award.

Notice that I wrote 'should'.

If you want to say Pujols is the driving force behind the Cardinals winning the division, then that argument has some merit.

The other argument flies in the face of logic.

I wish they would just call it the most outstanding player. Throwing the word "valuable" in there confuses all the idiot sports writers.

Here's the latest.

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG
Pujols 145 533 117 180 35 2 39 108 336 85 61 15 2 0.434 0.630 0.338
Lee 141 536 111 182 45 3 42 100 354 74 92 15 3 0.420 0.670 0.340

They keep getting closer. By the end of the season, Pujols may match or be ahead. Total Bases & SLG are really where Lee still has a substantial lead.

Here's the finals.

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG
Pujols 161 591 129 195 38 2 41 117 360 97 65 16 2 0.430 0.609 0.330
Lee 158 594 120 199 50 3 46 107 393 85 109 15 3 0.418 0.662 0.335

Very close at the end.

I have to say that Lee's strikeout total is a bit high, but that's not unexpected. His power numbers, IMO, give him the edge.

I believe that he did indeed have a better year than Pujols, by just a bit.

Congrats to D. Lee on winning the major league batting title.
