I hate the Brewers. Why is it that they leave guys in scoring position all day against the Cardinals, but drive them in against us? I'm starting to think that team only plays 18 games a year --- the games against the Cubs. They've lost 10 of 11 to the Cardinals, and Carlos Lee looks like Carlos Santana at the plate against the Cardinals, but we can't get the guy out. I don't get it.

Also, Izzy seemed to have hurt himself in the ninth.

Strained Right Abdominal Muscle is the early word.. We'll know more tommorow..

If this is an oblique injury he'll be out probably 2-4 weeks.

Izzy said "We'll see how I feel tommorow and I'll get checked out."

Barry Weinberg (Cards Trainer) Interview on Midwest Sports Report:

Izzy - Strained Right Abdominal Muscle. Re-examine tommorow. Keep it iced and we'll find out.

- That did not sound good the way his interview was. He didnt seem like he wanted to answer anything about this.

In other news - Reggie Sanders got plunked on the hand but X-Rays were negative and he should be ready to go tommorow.

It also helps that the Cards seem to handle Ben Sheets very well.

So do the Cubs.

It's fun looking at Sheets' game log against the Cubs last season. Prior to 2004, Sheets used to completely own the Cubs. However, last season, the Cubs gradually figured him out because they faced him so much over a short period of time.

Jul. 5th: 7 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 12 K, 1 BB, W

Jul. 17th: 7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 8 K, 1 BB, 2 HR, L

Jul. 27th: 7 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 8 K, 0 BB, 2 HR, L

Aug. 18th: 7 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 8 K, 0 BB, HR, ND

Aug. 23rd: 6 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, 5 K, 1 BB, L

The July 5th game was particularly painful because Clement threw one mistake pitch in that entire [expletive] game and the Cubs ended up losing 1-0. I'm still bitter over that one.

But the rest? Mwahahahahahaha.

Cardinals put closer on 15-day disabled list

April 27, 2005

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- St. Louis Cardinals closer Jason Isringhausen was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday with a strained right abdominal muscle.

Isringhausen was injured in the ninth inning of a 5-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. He has gone 7-for-7 in save opportunities this season, allowing one run in 8 1-3 innings with six strikeouts and six walks.

He had made a full recovery from offseason hip surgery, an injury that hindered him much of last season even though he tied the franchise record with 47 saves.

Manager Tony La Russa said Isringhausen likely will be sidelined two weeks. In the meantime, setup men Julian Tavarez and Ray King were expected to get the bulk of the closer duty.

To replace Isringhausen on the roster, the Cardinals recalled left-hander Carmen Cali from Triple-A Memphis.

I guess you guys are in the same boat we are for a while. I know La Russa said closer-by-commitee, but who do you see being the primary closer while Izzy is out? I'd have to figure it'd be old rubber-arm Tavarez who would get the bulk of the duties.

I see the Cards are trotting out Tguchi and Nunez today, with Grudz leading off. That means the Cards will score 6 or 7 runs today.

and grudz leads off with a homer.

I won't turn this into an "other game thread", but the Cards already lead the Brewers 1-0. Grudz hit a lead-off homer. See? The onslaught will likely begin, because the Brewers aren't playing the Cubs. I hate the Brewers.

And it's getting worse - now 2-0, bases loaded, nobody out.

Who in the Cards bullpen is designated to flip off LaRussa this year?

And the funny thing is, anyone they put in there will do better than anyone we put in as our closer. They put in some guy named Flores the other day and he closed it out.

Crazy Julian is good for a fun meltdown every now and again. Rest assured, whether he knows it or not, he was born for that role.

The Cardinals received a pleasant surprise Friday afternoon when a follow-up evaluation of reliever Jason Isringhausen found significant improvement in his strained right abdominal muscle. That caused team officials to anticipate an on-time return for the closer when he is eligible to exit the disabled list May 11.

"We're much more optimistic after the way he felt today that he'll be available after his two weeks are up," Cardinals head trainer Barry Weinberg said Friday.

Team medical supervisor Dr. George Paletta examined Isringhausen and found no need to administer an injection to alleviate pain.

Well I wonder if Carlos Lee will come out of his slump since he's playing against the Cubs tonight. He's been brutal against everyone else this year. He probably will have an MVP type series against the Cubs. I hate players that suck against everyone else but are All-Stars when they play the Cubs.

I don't think Carlos is going to be getting all that comfortable in the box.

Right, just what we need. Z, trying to exact revenge for Walker (a guy he showed up ON THE FIELD REMEMBER), hitting Lee sending more fury throughout Bob Watston's office on fines and suspensions for Z.

Don't think the umps won't be looking for it...

Well, Carlos Lee realizes the Cubs are in town and he comes up with two hits. He looked clueless against just about everybody else this year, but the cure for his ills comes to town. I really don't like guys like him.

I wouldn't blame that on Carlos (lee). I'd blame it on Carlos (Z). If everybody else pitches Lee well why can't the Cubs?

I'm somewhat joking. But count Austin Kearnes in the mix, too. I don't know why Carlos Lee and Kearnes can hit us pretty well, but other staffs seem to have little trouble keeping them off base.

It is difficult to fathom, but it happens every year. It seems almost every team they play has one guy who absolutely murders the Cubs, regardless of who is pitching, and yet struggles to meet the league average offencively against the rest of the league.

I don't understand it either, but it does happen.
