Hey Bertz, doesn't brendon davis' broken back create another spot on the 40?

Minor Leaguers can't go on the 60 Day IL.  They could call him up to MLB and immediately IL him, which would be a cool thing to do but not normal operating procedure.  They could also cut him now instead of waiting for the offseason, which would be pretty heartless.

I think you cut Lopez if you need a 40 man spot in the next few weeks, otherwise you try and hold off until trades naturally clear up spots to do anything.  A few veterans will get sent out I'm sure plus Canario and Mervis feel pretty prime for minor trades in the Velazquez for Cuas neighborhood.  There will be spots a month from now.

Did anyone think this team would be so awful?
And damn the injury bug has been so bad this year. I don’t remember so many guys being on the IL throughout the year and we’re barely at the halfway mark of the season.

It's the pitchers getting hurt.  Are they teaching them all screwballs or something?  Position regulars are all healthy but Tauchman and they still suck.

Rays got a classA shortstop from brewers in exchange for civale..

Cubs might get a live body for Kyle? If he agrees to a trade?

Or even Neris? Or Hayden? Or Brewer? Or?

Not sure Jed would bother trading a guy with the Cubs history and loyalty of Hendricks for some mediocre prospect.  Maybe they'd ask Hendricks if he'd prefer to stay or potentially play for a contender the rest of the year.

Lot of good updates here.  Surprising number of guys currently tracking for 2nd half of July, including some surprising ones like Alzolay.  Definitely means the team needs to be judicious about 40 man spots

They have a ton of fat on the 40 man position player wise. Not much on the pitching side, barely have enough roster spots for those 4 pitchers that are coming off the 60 day. Unless if they decide to part ways with Hendricks and Smyly or possibly trade Taillon

I agree with you. I suspect they would make it Kyle's choice and be happy with any salary relief?

I just read imanaga has an opt out after 2025

Interesting

Only if the Cubs decline a more expensive team option after 2025.

The way the contract is written, even if he's really bad or really good, it seems there's a pretty low chance he leaves before end of 2027.  I think it protects the Cubs by giving him a lower minimum, but if he proves he's good they can unlock an extra year through 2028 plus it gives him a raise on all his years.

Here's the contract terms.  It's complicated and hurts my brain: https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/player/_/id/86203/shōta-imanaga

I'm guessing at some point right after the break they'll be making some trades...
