Illinois is off this week? That'll be our best result in a while.

yes, this week sucked, but they literally just won a road game where they were 15 point underdogs the week before...

You did just win at Maryland 9 days ago, that was pretty good

Edit: Wish I read the entire thread before posting, especially with no delete button these days lol

Overall, a pretty ****** week of college football games.

Oregon at Utah will be good, though would have been better if Oregon didn't choke away the Washington game.  But yeah pretty bad overall plus Michigan bye week.  I guess I can do something else on Saturday lol

Was really just hoping I could enjoy the one team out of roughly 10 or so that I root for being really good at their sport.  A week ago there was talk of a massive Harbaugh extension and the possibility of continuing this success for the next decade.  Now its likely Harbaugh leaves and the program goes into the gutter for several years depending on how bad the punishments are.  I know no one is going to feel sorry for the poor Michigan fan, but all this stuff is a giant gut punch, the likes of which I've never quite felt as a sports fan before.

Whatever penalty they get will be deserved. If Harbaugh comes clean and gets in front of this, it's on a different path. So dumb.

Am I misunderstanding the Michigan sign stealing controversy?

Are they in trouble for looking at things anyone with a ticket to a game and a cell phone could be seeing?

I guess I was assuming there were already scouts at every game watching that stuff.

I don't get it either, but apparantly there is some rule that says a team can't do that.

*parody.  The B1G is so bad across the board outside of the big 3.

Yes. The outcry seems to be because it was so damn blatant with the staffer buying tickets to games to just about every UM opponent or potential UM opponent and having the people that attended hold up their phone all game to record opponents sidelines.

I personally don’t think this gave Michigan a huge competitive edge over other teams that are watching game film and other legal methods to steal signs (of course I’m biased), but it is listed as a violation so regardless of how much it helped them they have put themselves in a position to be punished.

I think the biggest damage will be to reputation as you can’t convince fans of some teams that this sign stealing operation was the sole reason for Michigan’s success the last 3 seasons. Even if the NCAA came out today and completely vindicated Michigan, there will always be a stain on this era at this point.

The interesting thing to me is the rumors that a guy named Jim Stapleton is the one pushing these allegations and leaking them to the media. Stapleton is a UM alum who has major beef with Harbaugh for whatever reason, and is the biggest reason he didn’t get the Vikings job (he’s a minority owner with Minnesota). Most importantly he is on the NCAA infractions committee

The guy who blew the whistle on Illinois' slush fund in 1967 that resulted in penalties that tanked football and basketball for over a decade was a DIA official who was mad he was passed over for AD.

Illinois wasn’t doing anything different than what a lot of other schools were doing, but they got caught by an insider who had access to the paper trail.

Interesting, I'd never heard of that scandal.  Found some good reading on it

Did Harbaugh bang his GF in college?  I dont think the reputation thing is that big of a deal.  CFB fans are going to hate certain schools no matter what, this is just something else they can hate Michigan  about.

I have noticed that outside of ESPN this really doesnt seem like a big deal to anyone.

It's going to be like the Astros scandal in MLB. But it's nothing like the Astros scandal in MLB. Not even close.

The most likely result is that Jim Harbaugh pulls a Pete Carroll and gets an NFL contract just before the school gets sanctioned. Michigan takes the punishment, Harbaugh goes and makes millions. Rinse and repeat.

How big of a punishment do you think the B1G is going to allow the NCAA to impose?

According to the CFB subreddit they are going to be erased from existence.

I really don't know, I could easily make an argument that its going to be much less than people are expecting, but I could make an argument that it will be much worse.  The concept of actually cheating to this scale hasn't really been seen before, regardless of how much of an advantage Michigan got from it.  The way the news on this drips out ever so slowly as if designed to keep the story in the news as much as possible doesn't really help either.  The NCAA may have to cave into public pressure even if they weren't planning on throwing the book at them.

It's the conspiracy and organization of the "crime" that makes it much worse than any advantage that Michigan may have gained. This is a highly coordinated attempt to gain a competitive advantage. But now this is also a process crime as well. And that makes it even worse.

I'm confused, how is this a process crime?  I may not be understanding correctly what a process crime is.
