Team to watch?

Cubs expected to make impact moves soon.

Wowzer that's going out on a limb considering ST is just around the corner.

Headline probably in every mlb city. Just insert team name. LOL.

I'll take as many good players as the budget can afford.  Guys like Bellinger and Chapman usually come at a reasonable # of years, unlike elite players.  Even if they have a NTC you can often trade them too if you want to make room for a prospect down the line to add surplus.  They traded Darvish.

Since you brought up Darvish, but not necessarily directed at just you.

The Cubs traded darvish at the exact same time the Ray's traded snell.

The Padres landed both established MLB pitchers for a butt-load of hugger prospects. Which team, cubs or rays, benefitted the most from their salary dumps after 3 long freaking years?

Guess it depends on what “soon”means to some people and what “impact moves” means. Note the plural there. Unless he does something we haven’t really discussed, I don’t see more than 1 impact move he can even make. Anything else would be small”ish”. I read it as, before spring training the Cubs will add a few more pieces. Which, really isn’t news. I agree with you, a real wowser headline!

I'd  hunch he's trade fodder at deadline

That seems like a lot of money for a guy who isn’t very good.

With this signing, they are buying a prospect in august?

I would say right now the Rays benifitted more. They do have a catcher from that deal. But the Cubs traded for such young prospects, I wouldn’t expect them to reap benifits yet. Let’s see what happens with Cassie before determining how that deal worked out. Either way, both those trades are examples of trading minor league talent for major league talent and not getting burned by the prospects you gave up. Something the Cubs should really consider with their minor league talent.

He's not great, but he's a solid reliever. In 2022 he posted a 3.18 ERA and 3.89 xERA and in 2023 a 3.99ERA 3.33 xERA. I doubt he only has a 65.6% strand rate again in 2024, so he's probably a pretty solid bet for a mid  3's ERA.

Guess he just wasn’t someone I ever saw attached to the Cubs.

I mentioned Moore a couple of months ago on here.  I think 2/8 would be about right?

No chance. Sox just spend $5.5M on a one year deal for a guy not as good as Moore. Or do you mean $8M a year.

I think he's more 7th inning guy, while the Cubs are, hopefully, shopping in the 8th/9th inning types.

So if he cost $5.5M what is the 8th inning guy going to cost? What does someone like Moore cost? And what 8th inning guys are left?

I think jed is going to wait wait and wait til he can choose amongst the crumbs for a never has been who is possibly able to throw a sweeper. A real nothing gained nothing lost move.

Man, the Cubs and Cody Bellinger feel like a mid-2000's sitcom where they both clearly will end up together, but have to date some oddball Otter Trainer they met on a walk or the Cupcake Bakery pastry chef who catered their best friend's funeral before they're allowed to get married.

I think this is very possible. I also think because of how the pen collapsed last year we are making way too much out of the pen and going a bit overboard when suggesting it sucks. By all accounts it was middle of the road or better than average. They just wore out. Had they added a few arms, as Arizona did, at the deadline they would have been fine. As an example, overall the dbacks had a worse pen than the Cubs and went to the World Series. Cubs have a lot of young pitchers that can fill those pen spots. They have a manager who uses young pitchers and is very good with running a pen. I think if they get one more guy capable of being in 65 games next year and he is decent, the pen will be fine. I am also sure every time they do blow a lead people will be here to tell us all how they suck. But we will not hear a thing when they are doing well. It is just the nature of the game and it’s fan base, 25-28 fan bases hate their teams bullpen.

Well as long as Ted, oops, I meant Jed, ends up happy in the end, that is all that matters.

I figure Robertson is going to be around 12M, Neris should be in that neighborhood too. Based on that Stephenson got 11/M a year, you're probably looking at 7-10m for a good setup man.

Spotrac has his market value at 2/6.8 based on similar comps.  So I was giving him a bit more.   I think the  Sox very much over paid  for Brebbia.

I would like that signing, if they could get Moore for 2 years at an $4M a year price.

Recent rumors (which were coming from the ever so iffy Hector Gomes) suggest Neris was seeking $50m total on his deal. That feels entirely out of touch, and considering the source, probably is.

50m pesos is right on target for Neris

Biitner, if you read he entire exchange you would see I am very skeptical of the amount thawv suggest. I think it will be closer to $8M per year. Thawv is who posted 2/8. My point is, if that is true, great. But I don’t think it is true.
