It's not that, he's very obviously struggled in high leverage situations and been much better in low leverage.

Even if we accept low leverage success/high leverage failure as a predictable thing(I don't, especially given his history as a successful late inning reliever in Detroit), I don't see any sign that it's factually true.  BBRef shows the leverage index of his appearances and there's no obvious correlation.

lmao, with the bases loaded and 1 out with the Cubs up by a run, Leiter throws 5 straight balls and still gets out of the inning.  That is horsefeathers hilarious.

On one hand, I cannot stand the Cardinals, on the other hand...I have a hard time blaming Burleson for being so mad.  The first was iffy-bad, the second was really bad.  Woof.

Glad we got out of that one.

If you're afraid of the home run ball (which he's been a victim to regularly this year) you end up nibbling and walking guys, which is what we've seen of late from him.  Less risk to have a solo shot in a game you're up by 4 but it kills you up by one.

Your problem TT (and I'm being 99% facetious here) is you just won't let us meatball for a bit over here.

Edit: I love you TT

His WPA is positive so he can't be bad in high leverage situations.

He called the exact same pitch a strike against Tauchmann in the previous inning.  It's trash but it went both ways.

Yeah it's been a consistently big zone, especially wide.  That strike 2 was as bad as any that I've noticed today though.

Oh yeah, that was the worst screw job by an umpire that I've seen since that Dodgers game in April where all 3 Dodgers outs in the 9th were on clear balls that were called strikes.

In all the enjoyment of that moment, I didn't even realize the DP grounder was also a ball.  So Leiter comes in, gets ahead of the 1st batter 1-2, then throws 9 straight balls, of which 8 were taken, and gets 2 outs.

lol, I really do try to remember that a lot of folks are living in the moment in the game thread.  The Fulmer thing just baffles me a bit because it's not like other spots where I might say 'it's not so bad' to a marginal player but instead it's 'he's objectively good, you don't have to be mad he's playing!'  Save your blood pressure spikes for a different roster spot I say.

Guys like Maddox, Glavine, etc from the past that lived on the corners, would love this ump giving them those calls off the plate both in and out....

He looks old enough that they probably did.
