It seems like Purdue has 4 guys every year that are at least 7'2"

Pretty much since AJ Hammons freshman year (2012-13), we've had a 7-footer on the roster. Haas came in during the 2014-15 season, with Haarms joining three years later. Edey's freshman season would have been Haarms' senior year, but Haarms transferred that season. We also had Williams and Swanigan, who were both under 7 feet but played bigger.

No, Edey cannot shoot the 3 at all. And if he was merely 7' instead of 7'4'' he would be very good rather than great. He'd still probably be right there with TJD as the best big in the conference, but he would not be so dominant because he wouldn't get to freely elbow guys in the head.

Except he doesn't freely elbow guys in the head. Last year was a different story, but he's been much more under control this season on both ends of the court. The guy doesn't get into foul trouble because he changed his defensive style of play. On offense, he's gone to the right hook a lot more this year and isn't leading with his elbows nor lowering his shoulder into people.

And yeah, if he was four inches shorter he wouldn't be as dominant. But the fact remains that he is 7'4 and has progressed tremendously for a guy that's only been playing for 5.5 years.

I'll admit I haven't watched him as much this year, so if he's gone less brute force, then good on him and Painter cleaning that up. And he is very talented and certainly worthy of the praise he receives. I was just pointing out that those 4 inches make a huge difference - and he uses them to his advantage very well.

He's definitely made a conscious effort to avoid foul trouble this year on both ends of the floor. The guy that really needs to work on that aspect of the game is Kaufman-Renn. Every post move he makes to the basket consists of him lowering his shoulder hard into the defender. He has a lot of talent, but he's not going to be able to get 20 minutes a game until he cleans that up.

A little over 2 minutes left in the game, and Purdue has been called for 6 fouls. IN THE ENTIRE GAME.

That's how we do.

Purdue is definitely good about keeping fouls to a minimum, but that was a horribly officiated game both ways.

Back on the topic of college basketball disaster seasons in this seemingly bizarre season where nobody's sure who's actually good, LSU was 12-1 and receiving votes at the end of December, and since then have lost 11 straight, falling to last in the SEC.

Purdue stinks

Better than your team.

I don’t have one, I just am an observer and follower of CBB.

Meh, if you had one, I had a pretty good chance of being right.

Wisconsin? Yeah they suck too and I have always hated them.

Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, California, Texas... Outside of about five teams, it's hard to argue that a team is as good as Purdue.

Rather than "does Purdue stink?", I think the better question might be "is northwestern actually good?". I don't really follow college basketball all that closely anymore, but what they've done this season likely far exceeds everyone's expectations.

There’s 7-10 teams I like a lot more than them in the tournament. Think they’re frauds. Also Painter is a gutless choking dog.

Jesus. Where exactly did the Purdue Pete touch you?

I was pretty worried leading up to this game because of what NW has been able to do. I think Purdue is going to get a lot of horsefeathers for this loss for the next week, but this loss is not going to look quite so bad going into the tournament.

The IU game next week might vault them into the top 25.

I really just don’t think they’re good. No bias. Just don’t think they’re prohibitively good or a definitive 1. I like a lot more teams than them. Aware I’m maybe very wrong, but prefer a lot of other teams I’ve seen vs them and think they’re just in the cluster of like the 12-20 teams who can win it.

There's some very strong language being used. Hard to not take it as a bias.

Purdue has looked very vulnerable to some very light pressure

I think that's a fair assessment. I'm hoping it's the kind of scare that can re-focus them for the tourney run.

After being able to actually watch the game (I was listening on the radio live) I feel a lot worse about this loss. Northwestern didn't play all that great either. The second half was dog horsefeathers all around. Purdue, Northwestern, and the refs. Northwestern had the better defensive composure and were doing very well swinging the double team on and off of Edey. Purdue looked like they had never played together before.

I hope these guys feel embarrassed while watching tape. That was a bad loss.

It seemed to me that the Boilermakers were getting dejected by not getting calls and just let the game get away from them. I really hope they take this as a learning experience that there are going to be games where refs swallow their whistles.

The strange thing is that Purdue has faced full-court pressure from a variety of solid teams earlier in the season and did not have much trouble with it prior to the last few games.

The big thing I would like to see changed is to have Smith NOT randomly jump in the air before he figures out where the hell he's passing the ball. That part of his game seems to have gotten much worse lately. We saw it on that huge turnover in the IU game, and he did it multiple times yesterday.

Do I think there should have been more fouls called yesterday? Absolutely. Edey was getting mauled. However, I also know that Purdue missed several wide open looks from the perimeter and Northwestern did an amazing job shutting down Loyer. Purdue played flat in the second half, and that has been a disturbing trend the past 5-6 games.

Both Big 10 games I watched this weekend - Illinois/Rutgers, NW/Purdue - featured the refs swallowing the whistle and allowing hand-to-hand combat. There seemed to be contact on every single shot attempt. Illinois/Rutgers stayed aesthetically pleasing, but that second half of NW/Purdue was as hard to watch as a rock fight.

One of the speculated reasons for the Big 10 not living up to expectations in the Tournament has been that the rest of college basketball does not officiate games the way the Big 10 does. Every year the Big 10 says it’s going to clean the game up, and every year by the end of the season, it’s right back to caveman basketball.

This is interesting because I've seen discussion that the opposite is true of the SEC, where there's been a few 70 foul games and plenty of whistle-fests in general. Some of this is a stylistic/cultural thing(e.g. the B10 shoots better on the whole so you may have more SEC teams throwing athletes at the lane) but it's hard to tell given how small and varied the tournament sample size is.
