Hockey, but a very very very long way from the NHL.

After a few months of planning and gathering gear, I dragged my 40-year-old out-of-shape carcass to a friendly hockey pickup and played goalie for the first time.

Watching hockey, playing it as a skater, I never realized goalies are the hardest working people on the ice. Moving side to side on that posture, going down and getting back up constantly, kills your legs in a way a 50-second skating shift never does.

In order to coach you have to take a lot of courses and one of my first a goalie coach had us all stand and simulate what a goalie goes through in a shift. It wasn’t that hard for the 24 year olds, but the room was mostly 40-something’s and even some 50+ male and female. The moaning and groaning was prominent.

Tage Thompson has 5 goals tonight with 4m to go in the 2nd.

This is rock bottom for the Blue Jackets.

Oh, it's now 8-2.

Team has completely quit (well, ten of them are injured, but the rest have quit).

Brad Larsen is the worst coach of all time.

I don't know which of these feel more like a video game stat:

Conor McDavid with 89 points through 49 games

OR

Kirill Marchenko with 13 goals and ZERO assists

Ovechkin…

In 2018-19, he became only the 4th player aged 33 or older to score 50 goals in a season.

In 2019-20, he would have become only the 2nd player aged 34 or older to score 50 goals in a season if not for the pandemic (48 goals in 69 team games)

In 2021-22, he became the oldest player at 36 to score 50 goals in a season.

In 2022-23, he's on pace for 50 goals again.

If he gets 50 this year he'll be the only player with 10 seasons of 50+ goals.

A few years ago my dad and I were talking about his chances of catching Gretzky for most goals in a career and while it seemed like he had a shot at it, it didn't necessarily seem likely. Now it seems like a matter of when not if. Gretzky at 37 scored 23 goals in 82 games, at 38 he scored 9 in 70 games and then he retired. If it wasn't for the lockout in 04-05 which lost the whole season, the lockout in 12-13 and then Covid shortened years in 19-20 and 20-21, he could have the record already.

I assume we're talking about Ovechkin here?

Oops. Yeah. I had an opening sentence and then deleted it.
