Sometimes you're the Schwindel, other times you get Schwindeled

Steele very quietly went from being okay but exceptionally lucky to just plain good like two months ago. Super super encouraging stuff, especially in comparison to Keegan who seems to be (understandably) wearing down a bit

Also he's got a good ways to go before he can win back our trust, but Madrigal's been legitimately good in his brief time back from the IL

Whoever made that comparison between this Cubs team and the tanking Bulls teams of the last half decade is right. They are bad, but not nearly bad enough to lose consistently to other tanking teams. Definitely one of the downsides of not trading Willson, Happ, Smyly, etc. at the deadline.

That said, I don't worry about tanking as much in baseball as I do in other sports, even with the draft lottery now in place. Obviously would prefer to have a top 3 pick, but its mildly enjoyable to win even with a team that's going nowhere this year. What I don't want is a situation where beating up on some bad teams leads the FO to believe the Cubs are closer than they really are. I don't think that will be the case...at least I hope not.

The NBA is so much different than the MLB though. The most sure fire way to acquire a bonafide star in the NBA is through a top 3 pick, and you can't really have a good NBA team without at least one bonafide star. I think there's more pressure to tank aggressively in the NBA than the MLB.

It might be an unpopular opinion but I am actually really enjoying watching the Cubs right now. Much more so than at the beginning of the year, at least. Like, I know they're not good, but it's still fun to me to watch the emergence of the future Cubs team. Like a slow unwrapping of Christmas presents. Some are probably socks and others are hopefully a new NES. And the vets that we have seem like good guys for helping some of the kids adjust to life in the league. Happ and Contreras obviously love it here. I still hold out (probably false) hope that we resign Willson.

Not trying to defend the decisions that got us here, or the merits/demerits of tanking. Just saying that I am enjoying watching them for the first time in a long time. They're kinda fun.
