Omg Nazier Mule

I love it!!

he gonna pitch or hit?

....or both

Announced as a pitcher, guessing he's a bullpen arm. But getting guys that can throw 100 mph is a nice change for the Cubs.

He seems to be universally considered a better pitcher. The Cubs might let him do both this summer and maybe even next year before forcing him into one, which is what the Cardinals did with Masyn Winn.

Yep, the first senior sign. Although Birdsell is probably a guy that gets slot money. He's actually a legit prospect that only fell due to injury concerns.

Pipeline had him at 101, BA 137, PL 160

This is a lot of pitchers.

I wonder if that's just the way the board is falling for the Cubs or if it is a conscious decision. Combined with most of our top prospects being hitters, I wonder if the potential returns from trades they are discussing are more focused around position players.

They also haven't had much luck with pitching in the International market, so maybe this is just a conscious decision to try to address a gap in the system.

I assume the Cubs are confident in working the money out, but so far it would seem they need to find some some additional money somewhere to sign all the 2-4 picks:

1 - Horton (under slot)

2 - Ferris (over slot)

3 - Paciolla (over slot)

4 - Mule (over slot)

5 - Birdsell (around slot)

Yeah it's a really interesting question because there's a number of explanations:

- It's just the way the board fell

- It complements the upcoming trade returns

- The team feels it has a competitive advantage developing pitchers

- Like Irrelevant Dude said, they haven't gotten much pitching out of the IFA market, so they simply want to make sure SB and MB have a full complement of arms next year

I'd believe any of them. It does make me want the team to largely eschew arms at the trade deadline though unless those arms have an ETA in the next 12 months.

Cubs will have roughly $500K to play with in overages before any penalties, so that certainly counts. 7th rounder, Nick Hull, is the first big money saving senior sign. Wouldn't shock me to see at least 2 more in rounds 8-10.

How do they get innings to all these guys?

A couple to full season ball(Horton, Birdsell) a couple to the complex league(Ferris, Mule), a couple of the senior signs might be relievers real quick(Hull), and a couple probably need pitch lab/dev list/rehab time(McGwire, Frisch).

And a couple of current fringe pitchers will shortly find themselves on the outside or experiencing new "injuries"
