If they went the discount route on Horton to go overslot at 2, I'm somewhat glad they went with a higher upside rather than safe.

With that said... With Lee there, you scrap those plans and go BPA.

If they sign both picks for slot, I'll be disappointed.

Horton shouldn't be anywhere near slot, at least I'd hope.

He's got another year of college eligibility left, so they don't have a lot of leverage.

He's got closer/back end of the bullpen written all over him. I don't know if that's what you want at 7.

It’s okay to just stop at “I don’t know anything about this stuff”.

He's thrown 53 innings of college baseball and a TJ surgery already under his belt.

He's a 20yo projected in the top half of the 1st round while rising quickly. It would not be completely shocking.

I can tell a lot of posters here didn't watch him against against CWS champions Ole Miss in the CWS.

FYI, he looked like Kerry Wood in his 20 strikeout game.

Just sayin'.

On the one hand that’s pretty impressive, on the other hand…, Notre Dame.

The former is kind of great, and the latter is a prerequisite.

He was projected to go 10-20, so they should. They probably already know his number.

This is from Kiley McDaniel (he’ll get more than the $3 million Kiley mentions since he went too 1):

. I think he'll want top half of the first round money because he might get that next year with a full dominating season, which means he might go anywhere from getting a slot bonus in the middle of the first, to overslot in the comp round, to getting $3 million after the third round, to not drafted at all.

Sure they do. Let's say the Cubs want to save $1.5M. Horton needs to be a top 15 pick again next year to beat that. That's a ton of risk.

Prospects Live ranked Horton 12th overall:

12. Cade Horton

Right-Handed Pitcher, Oklahoma

Horton was a highly regarded prep pitcher and third baseman, but went undrafted due to signability. He then tore his UCL and missed all of 2021 and the beginning of 2022 recovering. A true sophomore, Horton has a metrically appealing fastball and a high-spin power breaking ball that gave hitters fits at the end of the 2022 season. The training wheels came off in June and he started blowing hitters away. Horton is a fantastic athlete on the mound as well. He could end up a guy that sits 95 with a power breaking ball and a pro body.

MLB Pipeline ranked him 24th:

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 65 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50

One of the top two-way prospects and two-sport talents in the 2020 high school class as a right-hander/shortstop/quarterback, Horton had second-round ability but went unselected because he was all but unsignable. He missed all of his first season at Oklahoma following Tommy John surgery in February 2021 before opening this year as the Sooners' starting third baseman and not taking the mound until March 29. After he finished the regular season with a 7.94 ERA, his stock soared when he logged a 2.61 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 31 innings over five postseason starts as Oklahoma finished second at the College World Series.

Horton's fastball velocity came back quickly but his life and command didn't, so his heater got hit until the playoffs, when he sat at 94-96 mph and topped out at 98 with improved armside run and carry. His biggest difference-maker was a slider that got much better after he toyed with trying to add a cutter before the Big 12 Conference tournament, giving him a wipeout breaking ball that parks in the mid-80s and reaches 90 mph with two-plane depth. It's an upgrade over his low-80s downer curveball.

Horton also dabbles with a fading changeup, though it's too firm in the upper 80s and he doesn't land it for strikes. A quality athlete who looked rusty but not out of place at third base for the Sooners, he pounded the zone with his fastball and slider during the postseason. He doesn't come with a long track record of college performance but his ceiling as a No. 2 or 3 starter could land him in the top 40 picks.

53 innings as a sophomore, including TJS, is reasonable and not a death knell to his SP hopes. I’m sure teams actually think the lack of miles is a feature, not a bug.

As an example, Dylan Cease was drafted out of HS and then needed TJS at a similar age as Horton. Cease didn’t break 53 innings until his age 20 season, just like Horton.

The Cubs have $504K to play with from the 5% overage. If Horton gets paid at Pick #10 money, that'd save the Cubs another $727K. Combine the two, and that's enough to give their 2nd rounder equivalent to the 25th overall pick, or give their 11th rounder 2nd round money.

At pick 12, they save $1.12M. That would allow them to give their 2nd rounder 22nd pick money, or their 11th rounder 45th pick money

Pick 15, $1.62M, 2nd rounder = 17th pick, 11th rounder = 35th pick

Pick 18, $2.05M, 2nd rounder = 14th pick, 11th rounder = 28th pick

Pick 20, $2.30M, 2nd rounder = 13th pick, 11th rounder = 24th pick

Obviously you can spread the money around to multiple picks, or go overslot at any other point, but figure the above is illustrative.
