Kevin Made sighting! 2-2 with a BB before being pulled (hopefully just load management coming off injury). This system needed one dang bat starting out hot.

hey i don't even care if you want to excuse the plentiful Ks dating back to all last season, but maybe most striking is that Owen Caissie doesn't really seem to know what an XBH is, muscling up a .071 ISO in competitive action covering 3 months

we're always expected to believe the coaches are somehow breaking these guys down to build them back up and that's why their in-game efforts look so pathetic, but a far more simple explanation seems likely..

That he's the youngest player in his league?

Oh, and your math is wrong. His ISO for his minor league career is .163. Unless you're calling his 29 games in full season ball 3 months?

He's not including his Complex League numbers, so in full-season ball it's .071. In terms of time that's more like 5 weeks(8/24-9/19, 4/8-4/16) so while it touches 3 different calendar months that's not how I'd couch it.

Aug-Sept-Apr; 40 K & 5 XBH, yeah he's young so the breaking-him-down narrative can really thrive here

August 24th to September 19th, plus April 8th to April 16th

"3 months," got it. You're definitely looking to have an honest conversation here.

i'm really just saying that "it's good that he's been haplessly floundering, he's supposed to! put your trust in the guys who haven't developed an impactful home-grown regular since Contreras" is a bit of a tough sell, for me

Feels like you're beating up on sentiment that isn't happening here, the only mention of Caissie since Opening Day that I can find was a 'got his first hit, had to be rough to start the year 0 for a week'. Caissie's start to the year isn't something you can write off as age relative to level, it's non-competitive on every axis. It's also 7 games and less than 30 in full-season ball, with an aggressive assignment after he humiliated the complex league, so I'm not biting my nails that Caissie's future profile is hanging in the balance.

On the subject of ARL, these are the guys where it's relevant. I'm doing hitters only since I don't super care about ARL for pitchers, and I don't want to double my work

Iowa

- Brennen Davis is the 12th youngest hitter in the International League, 18th in AAA overall

Tennessee

- Ball, Morel, Velazquez, and Perlaza are among the 30 youngest hitters in the Southern League, but would all be in the 50+ range for AA overall

South Bend

- Owen Caissie is the youngest hitter in the Midwest League, #2 in Hi-A overall

- Pinango and Howard are 5th and 8th respectively in the MWL. 6th and tied for 15th in Hi-A

- If Kevin Made is in fact just making a pit stop at MB before going to SB, he'll be the youngest hitter in Hi-A

Myrtle Beach

- Preciado is 6th in the Carolina League, 11th in A Ball

- Triantos is 13th in the league, 28th in A Ball

- Made is 20th and Alcantara 25th in the MWL, but like the Tennessee guys not insanely young for the level overall (Alcantara surprised me, I didn't realize he had nearly a year on Preciado)

- PCA's still young for the league, but only modestly so. He's younger than Howard so if he gets a quick bump (it seemed like he was close to breaking camp with SB) it'll quickly resume being a large feather in his cap

There's certainly arguments to be had for exactly how much to weight age relative to league. IMO, for guys like Caissie and Made (assuming the quick bump) it's so massive it needs to be part of essentially every conversation about them. And while not as all encompassing, even for the Preciado tier of guys it's still a big piece of context that heavily informs just about any evaluation of their performance.

Excellent presentation. To put it more succinctly - these guys barely have ball hair and you are grading them in an extremely unfair manner.

How is that more succinctly, and if so, pass.
