They really need to make OT in the playoffs a 10 minute period. This reminds me of the 2019 AFC title game where Mahomes and Brady scored on almost every second half drive and it felt like whoever won the coin toss would win the game and sure enough that’s what happened both in 2019 and tonight

Yes the bills should have stopped them but both offenses were scoring every drive. The coin toss played a huge part in deciding the game

Give each team one chance of a possession. This should be the end of this stupid rule.

Both teams should get the ball at midfield and go from there

Yeah the defenses have got to be gassed at that point. Whoever wins the toss has a massive advantage in OT

I’d go with this too with the caveat that there are no extra points in OT. Every TD requires a 2 pt attempt. But for the playoffs what is wrong with a 10 minute period instead of sudden death?

Hockey and baseball (temporarily hopefully) both alter their overtime rules for the offseason so it’s not unprecedented.

It’ll probably change eventually.

There should be a push for it this offseason with this being the 2nd time in 3 years this has happened

Allen was the better QB. Mahomes had the better weapons. I'd be inconsolable if I was a Bills player. The season shouldn't end without you getting a chance in a tie game. Literally every other sport gives both teams a chance.

Yes, it sucks, but all the Bills had to do was NOT give up 40 yards in 15 seconds at the end of the fourth.

I get that and a lot of people will go back to this, or the choice to kick deep.

To me, you can (and should) take the entire game into account and not just one 15 second blip. It ended in a tie. The OT rules should be based off the fact that the first 60 min resulted in a tie.

What was wrong with kicking deep at the end of the game? If the squib, can’t the Chiefs just kneel with the ball or do I have the rule wrong? It’s not like the Chiefs had a big return on the kickoff.

As a casual NFL fan, I thought the OT kind of deflated a great game. I think a10 min OT period would be great.

Huh. Maybe you are right. I was basing that off maybe few seconds would run off.

it’s not easy to fair catch a true squib kick or do I have that wrong

No, you're right. It's all but impossible. Once the ball hits the grond, no fair catches allowed. But you can just kneel it as soon as you pick it up. The idea would be to squib it so they have to field it at the 10 or 15, and then spend time getting to the 25 or 30 or whatever instead of just being able to teleport to the 25 on a touchback. Would it have cost the Chiefs the yards/time to not get the FG? Who knows. I don't think it's quite as big of a deal that people are making it out to be.

Yeah the idea is they have to field it inside the 20 and have to return it otherwise risk being backed up to your end zone. IF the kick is executed properly the return team has to choose between using seconds or having bad field position. IF the squib kick was executed properly the Chiefs almost certainly don’t win.

I say if because I’m pretty sure I’ve seen more squib kicks turn into starting a drive at the 40 than ones that actually have the effect they intended to have.

I like the two five minute half idea instead of a single 10 minute period. Eliminates any coin flip luck. But also realistically ends up making many OTs somewhat college like in nature. But without eliminating whole aspects of the game, including the clock.

But as long as we're brainstorming ideas I'll add one new rule to tack onto the 5 minute half OT. A 11 point mercy rule. Basically game ends if either goes up by 11 in OT. I'd maybe even consider 10, but any way to make teams go for 2 more is good by me. But still can't be a one possession game then.

Yeah it has to be executed well. I've seen a few go out of bounds too.
