I like Daboll. He was able to develop another duel threat QB into a pro bowler (though there are some differences between Allen/Fields). The Bills offense seemed inconsistent from game to game this year with a few notable duds in there, but they still finished 10th in offensive DVOA this season (and 5th the year before). He's been working until a defensive minded HC, so I assume he gets a lions share of the credit for the offense. He comes from the Belichick coaching tree which is a pretty mixed bag I guess but hasn't worked for the Patriots since 2016.

I haven't heard anything about requesting an interview with McDaniels. IIRC the Bears interviewed him last time and liked him, so maybe they don't feel the need to do anything there until the Pats season is over.

they're interviewing like half a dozen guys they've spoken to before.

Yeah, McDaniels probably ain't happening. Polian is a Colts guy. McDaniels spurned the Colts. Probably some bitter feelings there. Doesn't sound like anyone has reached out to him yet.

Well McDaniels is my number 1 or 2 choice so that sucks. It does seem like George and Ted would be against McDaniels because of the Colts thing as they would desperately want to avoid another McGinnis like situation (or Arians to a lesser extent)

Sadly the article is behind a paywall. One tidbit I got from reddit:

Brian Flores and Tua Tagovailoa once got into a shouting match in the locker room after a bad half from Tua. Tua said Flores "doesn't know how to talk to people." And Flores responded with the team needing "better f****ing play" from the QB.

I think I'd rather keep Desai than Fangio back. I think he has some upside as a future HC. And if it's not in Chicago, he'd bring back comp picks. But I truly think he can be a really good DC. I know Fangio is good, but I can't help but to think there could be some letdown or resentment after he worked so hard to get a HC job and be given a raw deal.

I'd love meshing the Flores (Belichick) and Desai (Fangio) defenses together if the Bears hired a defensive coach.

Reading reactions from Dolphins fans about the Bears interviewing Flores, they all seem to believe this would be very bad for Justin Fields.

Dolphins fans have been delusional about Tua like Bears fans were with Mitch. Flores is a defensive guy anyways.

Smith is separating from the pack for me as I revisit some things about him.

He believes football organizations aren’t as efficient as possible in player development. He would lead his team in a way NFL teams typically aren’t led, with an emphasis on the whole person and not just the player.

“We spend so much time, resources, energy, attention on draft evaluation,” he says. “We have huge dossiers on these players, where they are from, how they learn, personal lives, social skill set, scores, their history, everything. After the draft, all that information about that player we learned doesn’t get integrated into his onboarding. I think that’s a mistake. You can onboard players and utilize all that information to put a plan together that gives them a chance to give them a better chance to be a better man, better member of the organization, and a better football player. There is a holistic approach to player development we are missing.”

Smith isn’t interested in being a de facto personnel director who only is in charge of acquisitions and roster management. He wants to be the man who provides the vision for a franchise.

Edit- him and Soup are bound to hit it off, right?

Smith is a bit of the opposite of Pace where he nailed his first round picks and then struggled to find talent in the later rounds. Got a bit of a raw deal in Houston at the end but built good rosters. I wouldn't be overly excited about hiring him but wouldn't be upset either.

Flores is definitely intriguing but I'm concerned about a revolving door at OC, similar to what Lovie Smith ran into when he was Bears' HC.

i'd say this is why Doug Pederson is my #1. An offensive guy that's won with Nick Foles and has had a ton of success. He's very connected in the game and can bring in good OC's. The question is, how much of the Eagles success was due to Frank Reich?

GM interviews requested

Ed Dodds- Colts Assistant GM & VP of Player Personnel

Morocco Brown- Colts Director of College Scouting

Kwesi Adofo Mensah- Browns VP of Football Operations

Glenn Cook- Browns VP of Player Personnel

Jeff Ireland- Saints Assistant GM & VP of College Personnel

Rick Smith- Former Texans GM & Pres. of Football Operations

Ran Carthon- 49ers Director of Pro Personnel

Omar Khan- Steelers VP of Football and Business Administration

Joe Schoen- Bills Assistant GM

Eliot Wolf- Patriots Director of Scouting

HC interviews requested

Leslie Frazier- Bills DC

Brian Daboll- Bills OC

Doug Pedersen- Former Eagles HC (no request needed)

Matt Eberflus- Colts DC

Byron Leftwich- Bucs OC

Todd Bowles- Bucs DC

Nathaniel Hackett- Packers OC

Brian Flores- Former Dolphins HC (no request needed)

Dan Quinn- Cowboys DC

I don't think there's a bad GM candidate there, except for Ireland, and even he's not a terrible candidate if he's learned from his previous stint with the Dolphins. The HC candidates have a few guys I'd hate (Frazier, Pederson, Quinn), a few guys I'd be fine with (Daboll, Leftwich, Bowles), and a few guys I'd feel really happy about depending on the staff they could build (Eberflus, Flores, Hackett). I'd still love to see Josh McDaniels, Kellen Moore, Kevin O'Connell, and Mike McDaniel brought in.

I definitely find myself more intrigued with the GM list, but I think that's part of the nature. It's so much easier to see coach warts from the fan perspective.

Big thing for me right now is I don't think any of these coaches are "coach above GM" hires. That said I don't mind them doing initial screens. For any playoff coach, the bye week or week after WC round could be the only opportunity until SB bye week, and obviously you don't know who that will be. GM can still do a full search and have some data if someone for their short list ends up on a long playoff run.

I mean, McDaniels' playoffs will be over on Saturday so.....

I don't know why but I have the Pats in that game. I know, struggling rookie QB on the road against a better team, but there's always one weird WC result and the Bills have struggled at times this year and the Pats have the coaching edge.

I see so much Dodds love, but I'll be honest, part of me feels like it's a lot of Ballard regret being projected. Like I certainly see things to like but there's been so much fan consensus around him.

Or is it just that he's already made a lot of finalist lists the past few years so there's decent built in name recognition?

You're ignoring his time in Seattle.

I also have Aaron Glenn as my 4th choice for HC.
