a UM blog takes a more analytical look at B1G awards, argues Cockburn over Garza for conf. POY

https://mgoblog.com/content/big-ten-reset-hands-out-awards-part-one

Center was so, so stacked. I chose Cockburn over Garza because he facilities winning in a way Garza can't; even with the best offensive player in the country, there's a hard cap on any team whose center can't protect the rim, and we saw that come into play as Iowa dropped six conference games despite having one of the best offenses in KenPom history. Cockburn is an excellent offensive player in his own right and his impact there goes beyond the numbers because of the way he draws in defenses and opens up lanes for the Illini guards; he's also in the conversation for most impactful defender in the conference.

Yeah, the official all defense team was baffling. At least Frazier made it.

Ayo as POY...it's tough, because Ayo had a completely bonkers year in a conference where Garza had an even more bonkers year offensively (how often does the highest usage player in the conference also take the most shots and have the highest offensive efficiency? Just crazy), so Garza is going to win those awards, but it ended up more interesting than it was anticipated to be at the start of the year.

That UM article points out that in 5 of the last 7 years, the team with the best kenpom defensive efficiency in league play has not had a player named to the all-defensive team. Seems odd, but I get that there are teams that play great defense but may not have a singular standout defensive player.

I have no idea if Barttorvik's "DR" statistic is reliable, but he allows easy filtering by conference play so here is where the all defensive team ranks based on his metric:

Frazier - 76th

Morsell - 58th

Henry - 43rd

Wheeler - 7th

Johnson - 1st

So I guess its good they got the top guy in there?

i believe that's just def. rebounding rate

Well then I'm a complete moron. I was wondering why it was all Bigs at the top.

Well then in my brief search Barttorvik only has offensive rating for players not defensive rating so nevermind

All 12 teams left in the B1G tournament are in the top 60 in KenPom, which seems crazy to me. If Wisconsin, Ohio State, Rutgers and Maryland win today, the 8 quarterfinal teams would likely be in the top 30.

Illini get Rutgers tonight, little apprehensive, being their first game and with such high expectations this could be the toughest of the BTT for them. Not to mention Ron Harper Jr. turns into horsefeathering Michael Jordan every time they face the Illini and Rutgers did beat them in December. In that game Rutgers somehow got to the line 36 times, got to literally grab and hang on Kofi (there's a video of Mulcahy getting a jump ball call after grabbing and hanging on Kofi' arm), got a phantom flagrant foul call on Williams during a FT attempt and of course, Harper Jr. went off for 28 points.

I think Illinois remembers the loss to Rutgers earlier in the year.

I think it's fair to say that Ayo does.

Illinois-Rutgers is run, but switch over to Baylor-OSU for a bit, tied at 72 with 2 minutes to play.

Long time coming, about time Rutgers got their asses kicked by the Illini.

44-19 is quite the rebounding edge.

Rumor is Isaiah Livers has a stress fracture in his foot and is out for the season. Michigan’s leading scorer and senior leader...

That sucks. As an Illini fan, yes I want every little advantage we can get, but it sucks so much for a guy who has worked his butt off and now looks like he will not be able to play in the tourney for 2 straight years despite being a major player on a really good team

I have never before seen a game end because a team didn’t even try to rebound a miss on a free throw. 5 points with 3.1 seconds is nearly impossible to pull off, but horsefeathers. At least go down swinging.
