The hawks trade away some over priced defensive depth. Seems like it’s been 5 years of off seasons all about moving guys away rather than acquiring new talent.

If/when they play a new season I’m guessing it won’t be much different looking of a team than this past one.

Unless Stan can come up with some really unexpected trades, I agree. I think they'll be running this same core out there until the Kane/Toews/Keith/Seabrook contracts start coming off the books. The biggest hope for the team taking a leap is significant progress from the youngsters. Dach and Boqvist, in particular, need to play like first line guys. They need a big bounceback from Debrincat. It would help a lot if Suter were another Kubalik.

I think the names are going to be largely unchanged, though.

vegas was able to extend lehner for just 5/25. hawks really bungled this, he would have been a much better use of resources than all the nonsense they've spent money on the last couple years

bowman has to go. they got some luck and had a chance to reboot things, but he failed miserably. last offseason was the nail in his coffin.

I don't mind it.

Relying on a terrific but oft-injured goalie to carry your defensively challenged team hasn't been a recipe for success.

Who can we get at Crawford's cost that will change that dynamic?

Maybe a less terrific but more healthy goalie that costs less and put the money into improving team defense.

Or find another goal scorer and make the team fun bad again, instead of bad.

I mean the team is gonna suck for awhile because we stayed loyal to Our Guys and paid them. Might as well keep that train going with Crawford

My cursory Google search tells me they're basically locked into the current core for 3 years, with only Seabrook still with 4 years. What type of length would Crawford realistically get, and is their only way out of these contracts by attaching valuable assets to them to move them for shorter deals?

Is most the $9m actually freed up to use elsewhere, or is it all basically accounted for with raises?

The Lehner portion is probably accounted for, nobody thought they’d put that much into goalie again. But the Crawford to others category may be something they can pour into new stuff.

Blackhawks traded Brandon Saad again. For those keeping score at home, this will be the 3rd Saad trade the Hawks will lose

So they got a different Olli Maata and a 25 year old non-prospect for their best trade chip?

What the hell?

best trade chip? Saad with 1 year and 6 mil isnt very valuable. hes just not that good. its prob more of a salary dump to sign strome. z is supposed to be pretty good too.

not that any of this matters, because stan is lost

Not just my opinion...

Saad, a two-time Stanley Cup champion, is a five-time 20-goal scorer and two-way standout who plays (and plays well) in all situations. He surely would have been one of the top targets for contenders at the trade deadline had the Blackhawks held on to him. And a first-round pick in 2021 (hell, a second-round pick in 2021) would have been more useful than another average defenseman who’s unsigned beyond this coming season.

most avs fans seem to be negative or neutral on the trade

i'm not saying i think it's good or bad. i think it's about what he was expected to get in return.

If the Hawks are rebuilding, this doesn't help them at all. They get nothing for the future for one of their first line forwards on a reasonable contract.

If they're playing for next year, then they traded one of their first line forwards for a second or third line defenseman. They even kept ownership of $1M of Saad's contract here, so the deal didn't free up much room under the cap. Z is fine, but there probably will be defensemen available in free agency that would provide equivalent production for the same or lower cost due to the depressed mid-range of the market this year. Then you could still trade Saad for picks/prospects and have the picks/prospects and the average defenseman.

This was just dumb.

As a Red Wing fan, I think staying loyal to aging players will lead to disaster that will take yrs to get out from under. This is the 1st off season the Wings have actual cap room. I am not sure I know Bowmans plan, but staying the course would be silly.
