This strikes me as a pretty definitive white flag on Bauer. If they're making a run at Willson, there shouldn't be any further holdup.

Angels giving up a decent prospect for a pitcher who hasn't been good since 2017

The Angels will send infield prospect Jahmai Jones to the Orioles as part of the discussed deal, Rosenthal and colleague Fabian Ardaya report (Twitter link). The Orioles are eating more than half of Cobb’s $15MM salary in order to facilitate the deal, according to Connolly.

After raising the payroll to reach mediocrity and therefore contention in the NL Central, it doesn't make sense to me to trade Contreras. A few weeks ago when we didn't have money to spend and hadn't signed anyone that could help this year's team, it might have made sense to trade Contreras and Bryant and do a total rebuild. Of course, Bryant is still a possibility because of his contract/FA status.

he's probably got nothing left, but would have been fun to have him around for this horsefeathers season. With him being a transplanted Chicago guy I thought he'd end up with one of the two for his reclamation shot.

I'm guessing he wanted to be paid in something other than Stanley Nickels.

Free-agent right-hander Chris Archer is returning to the Rays, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. It’s a one-year, $6.5MM contract, per Jeff Passan of ESPN.

That trade will go down as one of, if not the worst, in Pirates history right? Aramis Ramirez for basically nothing and Gerritt Cole for spare parts were both pretty bad but the three guys the Pirates gave up could be stars and Archer imploded in Pittsburgh and then returned to Tampa.

From MLBTR: "It seems Bradley and agent Scott Boras are hoping to leverage strong demand into a much longer deal than might have been anticipated. Bradley is “seeking a significant contract, perhaps beyond four years,” sources tell Mike Puma of the New York Post (via Twitter)."

Okay, how about $10 million over 5 year?

So the Angels' plan is basically to load up on solid players, knowing that Trout and Rendon are SO good, that as long as they avoid a bunch of positions being replacement level that should be plenty good enough.

And I'll tell you what, I don't hate it.

Their pitching is still really suspect

Apparently the rest of MLB has decided to give gifts to the Cardinals, who after getting Arenado for nothing, will be moving Dexter to the Angels.

They're apparently paying like 95% of what's left on Dex's salary. So they're pretty much paying Dexter Fowler not to play for them.

Yeah, it really doesn't make any sense unless they have another OFer ready to go. They can't seriously be starting Bader, Carlson and O'Neil with Lane Thomas as the 4th OFer.

I think they’re in on Reddick, which that still isn’t that good of an OF. Arenado-Goldschmidt is a nice 1-2 punch but there isn’t much talent or certainty on the rest off the offense.

Right now ZiPS has the Cardinals with 3 players projected for more than a .320 OBP, and without the DH they can only play 2 of them at a time(by contrast, the Cubs have 8, which doesn't include Baez). Good to remember since a lot of the benefits from pitcher value, especially at the highest end with aces, are going to be diluted this year with folks not being able to handle the workload after such a light 2020.

It also sounds like someone in the Shark/Jake mold is fait accompli, which would bring us up to 42.

Teams can slow play 40 man moves (Yankees still haven't made Lemahieu official I believe), but I wonder if the other shoe that needs to drop is a trade or if it's just dumping a couple James Norwood types.

Yeah there’s plenty of pitchers we could cut loose I wouldn’t care about. Winkler, Norwood, Maples, Fenter, Holder, Wieck (if he’s broken), with Alcantra now in Vargas or Schrock could be let go too. Some redundancy with those 3. A trade could be coming too.

The Rangers are closing in on a one-year, Major League contract with free-agent right-hander Mike Foltynewicz, reports Kiley McDaniel of ESPN (via Twitter).

So we're not getting him, which is fine.

I keep going to back to what someone said about trying to trade for Adam Frazier and one of Kuhl/Brault and it makes too much sense. Can deal a spare part like Norwood and a couple of prospects we won't miss.
