maybe it's just me but I think I'd prefer the silence with amplified game sounds to a low hum in the background.

There's a lot of money to be made tarping of sections of seats and throwing up ads on them.

Anyone watching the scrimmage?

I am. The crowd noise is very pointless, it's basically constant white noise that turns up a little when something happens.

Hendricks is looking very sharp, Darvish command is off.

It sounds more like a waterfall that you might hear in a waiting room. Just weird.

I knew Javy was going to dong the crap out of Kyle Ryan there.

That was a very bad matchup for Ryan, I fear he’s gonna be a big regression guy (especially with 3 batter min). Hopefully he has a short leash, lots of that good year then completely useless Duensing vibes on him. Unless there’s 2 lefties due up in an inning I wouldn’t want to use him a lot. Jeffress and Wieck should be in ahead of him in innings with only 1 lefty due.

As mentioned, just amplify the in game sounds then maybe have the organist play throughout the game. Or live mike Javy.

the crowd noise is ridiculous. I'd rather hear the players.

i'm not sure if they made adjustments along the way but as the game went on, i was more and more glad the crowd noise was there after initially thinking it sounded bad. caught myself feeling like it was a real game when i looked away and was hearing it in the background. it would be really off putting and bizarre to hear silence and "hearing the real sounds of the game" or w/e probably isn't nearly as fun as it sounds and definitely isn't practical.

that said, i think they could do a better job implementing it.

Rizzo's MRI showed rib inflammation as expected, and status for Opening Day is uncertain.

If 3+ months of not playing, and dropping weight, isn't enough to make Rizzo's back functional, I guess it never will be.

Still getting back up to speed with the roster. When Quintana went down, I figured there was a bunch of options to patchwork the fifth starter spot, just now realizing that this makes Chatwood our fourth 'starter'. So now we're dealing with wild cards pretty much half the time (with Lester being a coin flip).

They should just basically bullpen 2-3 games a week after Kyle and Yu with the expanded rosters at 30.

Yeah, I would give Lester a soft cap of twice through the order (basically he can earn another inning if he's pitching well), Chatwood a pretty hard cap of twice through the order, and Mills probably limit to once through.

We've got several guys in the pen who can go multiple innings, so we should feel comfortable piggybacking with contrasting styles: for example something like Lester-Underwood, Chatwood-Wieck, and Mills-Alzolay.

I think there are several ways that this weird season hurts the Cubs worse than the average team, but this is a way it helps. The Cubs came into the spring with like 14 credible guys fighting for 8 bullpen spots, this gives them an extra couple of weeks to evaluate in real games which of those guys should stick. Obviously the cost of failure is much higher in a shortened season, but given the circumstances every team is going to be asking for a lot more innings out of their pen, and probably only the Rays and Padres have a better like 11th arm out there.

So what does the opening day 30 look like? Still happening?

I guess:

C: Contreras, Caratini, Phegley

1B: Rizzo

2B: Bote, Kipnis, Descalso

SS: Baez, Perez

3B: Bryant

OF: Schwarber, Happ, Heyward, Almora, Souza, Miller

SPs: Hendricks, Darvish, Lester, Quintana, Mills

Bullpen: Kimbrel, Jeffress, Brothers, Wick, Ryan, Gamez, Chatwood, Underwood, Rule 5 pick guy

No way Q is ready by next Friday and doubt they keep both Descalso and Miller over another pitcher and/or Nico. Some amount of Winkler, Wieck, Rea, Tepera, Sadler and Cotton are making it.

Also who the horsefeathers is Gamez?

I think this looks about right

Edit: Noticed no Winkler. The team was raving about him in the spring so unless something has changed since he's a lock
