oh my god goony this movie has been inside my head all week for absolutely no reason. How did we have this moment of synchronicity

After discussions with pitching coach Tommy Hottovy, Quintana switched his changeup grip over the offseason, moving to a four-seam setup after using a two-seam method. Quintana said this will allow the pitch to look more like his primary fastball and, perhaps more importantly, give him the confidence to use the offspeed offering more.

Last season, opposing batters hit .338 and slugged .538 against Quintana's changeup, per Statcast. He also only featured it 11% of the time, allowing hitters to hone in on his fastballs and curve.

"I think the four-seam grip is going to help me more get swings than a two-seamer grip," Quintana explained. "But, I think it's the best change to throw that pitch with confidence. That's all I need. That's what I've been doing. I want to show you in the games."

Sounds like they’re optimistic the tweaks can make him less wild

I'm not a professional pitcher obviously, but I've never gained control by lowering my arm slot, I had to be over the top on delivery to be effective at all. So I ask: is this witchcraft?

Some pitchers do develop better control by throwing from a lower arm slot. A big part of it (throwing motion) is just what feels comfortable, and more importantly, what allows you to repeat your mechanics and motion over and over again.

I don't like throwing sidearm or throwing from a lower arm slot, but it definitely improves movement on the ball (running action).

I'm trying to find a gif from @PitchingNinja, but I think you guys understand it.

Throwing overhand or from a high vertical slot allows you to get more on top of the ball, and is better for throwing breaking balls (curveballs) from what I've been told.

If Maples can even get his walk rate down to a Marmol-ian 15% without giving up the whiffs and ground balls he'll be playable. If he can do 10-12% he's closer-caliber.

“Marmol-ian” is an adjective that needs to be used more often.

According to this Nico is likely to make the OD roster, though not a lock. And the bullpen is likely to be

Kimbrel

Wick

Ryan

Jeffress

Tepera

Sadler

Winkler

Mills

Of the bubble guys, sounds like Sadler and particularly Winkler are standing out the most.

It’s great to see Winkler and Sadler standing out. Winkler was mentioned hitting 96 with a high spin rate and a solid slider. I’m less enthused about Tepera. I’d rather take a chance on Underwood since Tepera Is on a split contract.

It also really depends on Wick. He’s probably working on his slider/cutter “thing”, but if they don’t feel like he’s clicking he’d be another option to start off in Iowa.
