Pham really settled in with the Rays. Is he about go get expensive/are the Rays hoping Renfroe is a change-of-scenery candidate? Seems like an odd trade for them, though I can see why the Padres would do it.

Also it just me or the Padres and Rays seem to make a trade with each other every offseason?

If Kendrick only goes for $6.25 a year I can’t imagine Hernandez goes for more than $4.5 or so. We should get on that. Also trade for Margot you idiots.

It does seem almost too obvious to sign Hernandez and trade for Margot at this point. Two years, $10-12 mil seems fair for Hernandez. Then maybe one of our many lower level arms for Margot? I feel like we won't do anything until Monday though.

Hate to see it

DECEMBER 6: A source tells Chris McCosky of the Detroit News (Twitter link) that the Tigers “have no interest” in Russell.

DECEMBER 5: The Tigers are among the teams interested in free-agent middle infielder Addison Russell, Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweets. Russell joined the open market when the Cubs non-tendered him Monday.

Pham is a weird one for me, he has a career .844 ops but gets tossed around like a middle reliever, from one club to the next.

Why Margot? defense? is he projected to have a good MLB bat? I realize hes young, but the numbers dont inspire me

The deal with Margot is he was a top prospect for years and hit well in the minors and plays solid defense. The hope is getting him out of Petco/change of scenery would help him. (Last year he OPS'd .759 on the road vs .612 at Petco and still put up a couple WAR, which is better than Almora).

I had asked this about Margot a few weeks ago, as I saw a guy who doesn't hit for average or power or get on base.

This is a response from TT........

The sales pitch for Margot:

- He's entering his prime at 25, and his plate discipline(walk rate and O-Swing) took a step forward last year

- He has pedigree, entering 2017 he was a consensus Top 25 overall prospect and had made it through AAA

- Theo's red sox signed him out of the DR (I suspect this is mostly trivia, but it doesn't hurt)

- He's a strong defender, career +6 UZR and +9 DRS

- He's very capable against LHP, .331 wOBA career and .383 last year

- As a Padre, you can dream that on a different team where he's not playing 100 games in Petco + ATT + Dodger Stadium, he'll be in a greater position to succeed

- He did well enough last year that you can at least see the good version of Almora as a likely floor, but not so well that he's likely to command a ransom in trade

- He makes above average contact, which balances the roster slightly

There's probably some other nuanced points to make(like he's strangely not great on fastballs, which could be construed as an inability to make the leap or an easier mechanical/approach fix than picking up sliders), but that's the long and short of it.

I too find the lust for Margot here puzzling. He was barely better than Almora in the minors. He's a guy. Almora with a more speed and a slightly better glove in center. A better hitter? No reason to believe in any meaningful way.

I think Margot is a good fit for the roster, and has a nice balance of floor and room for optimism about more, while coming at a reasonable cost. He’s a good acquisition without taking a leap forward. I think of it similarly to the opportunistic move they made in trading for Montero.

He pitched to like a sub 3 ERA with the Brewers the last two years they traded for him mid-season. They seemed to have some Gypsy magic with him so glad he didn’t go back there.

Hot take: the Brewers' pitching depth is not half bad right now. They should sign at least one of Keuchel or Bumgarner, maybe even Porcello, and see how that goes

We’ve been saying it’s been their problem the last two years and they’ve figured it out. I still think it’s a big issue and they need to add at least 1, if not 2 guys in that tier of SP via FA/trade. Burnes and Perlata were absolutely brutal as SPs last year, Woodruff was excellent but was the first time he’s ever had success as a SP and he’s already 27/28 and has never pitched more than 122 innings in a year, Houser and Lauer seem like just guys.

If the season started today it’s Woodruff/Houser/Lauer/2 of Burnes/Peralta/Suter. They really need Woodruff to be that 3-4+ win guy he showed before the injury. If guys get favorable outcomes you can see how that rotation is fine, I guess, but it also isn’t hard to see it having issues again. They need to lock in some certainty, imo, to be more than a high 70/low 80 win team on projections and a serious threat. Unless they’re going to do the rebuild thing that’s been rumored this year and let the young guys get sorted out.

Hopefully the Dodgers are holding tight on their low years, high AAV offer like they did with Bryce and the Yankees or Angels come in with the huge offer he can’t turn down.

I’m almost positive there were reports we took a skeleton crew to Vegas last year. It was like Theo, Jed, a few assistants and business side people. So if we are taking 25 people this year you’d think it’s setting up for some movement this week.

25 should just about cover a Strop, Hernandez, Contreras/Bryant for unknowns, and Akiyama led winter meetings. Really looking forward to it

I don’t see KB getting moved at this point with the grievance thing and Donaldson and Rendon still FA. I think at least 1 of Willy, Q, Happ, Bote or Schwarbs (don’t want to move him) this week. Hopefully we do the signings you suggested too.

Jesus, taking 25 people has to mean we are looking to do stuff.

The Dollar Tree parking lot will be packed.

Cubs meetings will be held off site at the Holiday Inn.

With the Yankees will not be denied talk, If i'm Cole i'm calling their bluff and getting the facial hair policy revoked.

With Jesse Rogers hinting that a Bryant trade might be on the table this week, could a deal be structured with a PTBNL dependent on the result of his grievance? That might get a little messy, but seems like the best way to protect the other team against a lost year of service.
