Free agency hasn't started, so I don't think anyone is being pursued yet...except maybe by their own team.

I'll believe the Cards are willing to go all out for a guy like Lindor when I see it. It's just not their m.o. to put themselves that far out there.

I do suspect something big, but more in the Josh Donaldson neighborhood.

Pretty incredible that the Indians didn’t get an extension done with him.

The Indians haven't been shy about their complete lack of desire to pay out big contracts.

And 7/160 for ozuna?!

I hope the Cards are all over this signing of Ozuna. I just don’t see it with him as a top tier player.

Paying rental or near-rental prices for stars is very on-brand for the Cards. Heyward and Goldschmidt being very immediate examples.

Do the Cardinals have the pieces to get Lindor? Other than Flaherty all their young pitching has not really planned out, Gorman is only like the 40th best prospect in baseball by rankings and they have a pitcher I think around there too and that’s it. If the Dodgers go in on him and a May, Ruiz, or Lux is available I don’t think they can compete with that.

Edit I see the article says Gorman, “another prospect,” and 1 of Dejong, Edman or Wong. I mean that would be like 1 of Amaya or Hoerner, whatever value of “another prospect” is we have and then Happ or Bote. That just seems way too light for Lindor.

The Brewers traded Chase Anderson (had like an $8 mil team option they allegedly weren’t going to exercise if not traded) to the Jays for a nothing prospect and declined Eric Thames $7.5 million option. Surprised by both, but especially surprised by Thames, he had a very nice year as a strong side platoon 1B. They must be really tight for money.

This puts them ~$30M below last year's payroll. So they can probably retain Moose and Grandal now instead of just one, but the hit to their depth seems pretty risky.

Danny Salazar and Julio Teheran have been added to the FA market. If the money is right, either could be a #5 starter.

Danny Salazar has pitched 4 major league innings and just over 20 minor+major league innings between 2018 and 2019. Absolutely no interest. Teheran on a 1 year deal for the 5th starter would be interesting though, I’ve never been a big fan of his but on a cheap 1 year deal we could do worse and hopefully we can unlock something there.

Are you looking for the Cubs to corner the market on #5’s? Seems like they have enough.

They can't afford a #1-4 and don't have a #5 sure thing right now.

Can you point to a team with a "#5 sure thing" at this point in the offseason?

Certainly Salazar and probably Teheran aren’t a “sure thing” upgrade over any single one of or some combination of Chatwood, Adbert, Mills or Rea right now for the internal #5 options.
