This is bad. Assuming this is instead of a big time SP and not in addition to one, it's roughly to be expected though. They'll also either re-sign Moustakas or grab a 2b as well.

 

I'm really curious to see how Grandal does outside of LA though. BP basically had him as an MVP candidate when you include framing numbers, and I wonder if that will actually travel.

Good move for them. With his elite framing and their devil magic he improves them a ton since C was so weak for them last year. I would assume this is their one big spend, they will be at $120 mil with this move which has historically been as high as they go when they are competitive from the late 00’s/early 10’s.

It is important to remember that the Cubs do still have the best roster in the division. It'd just be real nice if they pushed it back above the typical margin for error in those projections instead of doing nothing.
