6th rounder: Kohl Franklin, RHP, Broken Arrow HS (OK)

Not ranked by BA or MLB.com

Same HS as Arizona's Archie Bradley. Overslot? 6'4" pitcher.

On the telecast, it says he's 90-93. Missed some time this year with a leg injury. Dad is an agent. Said he's got some upside.

As with the first two prepsters taken, Franklin apparently missed a good chunk of the year (most?) with an injury (broken foot). Stuff is decidedly "meh" but he's at least got a nice frame.

Both Cease and Estrada were 6th-round picks. Maybe this will be the round? D.J. Wilson was 4th round, he's the only other million-dollar superslot I can recall. (Well, obviously Sands and Steele, too...)

The 7-figure bonus overslots under this regime were Underwood in the 2nd round in 2012; Sands (4th), Steele (5th) and Cease (6th) in 2014; Hudson (3rd) and Wilson (4th) in 2015; and Estrada (6th) in 2017.

Let's not mention the other ones that didn't work out...

Yeah, I know -- Underwood is still a prospect and has a chance to reach the majors. I'm not high on the other guys on that list.

Eh, Underwood should reach the majors and Cease was a hit. Even if Hudson and Estrada are busts, you have to think 2 out of 7 is a pretty good hit rate for prep prospects.

I think Steele should make the majors too - early results from return from TJS seem good and if he returns healthy, he'll be at AA by next season.

So Joey Gerber, the closer for the Illini still hasn't been selected yet. He's ranked 126 on MLB's list and has good stuff.

I wonder if he's going back to school and informed teams he won't be signing?

Not necessarily - college relievers to tend to fall unless they can make it to the bigs in less than a year (which teams are starting to realize is rare).

I know I should expect a run of senior signs about now, but I would really appreciate a fun pick in the 7th like Kerry Wright.

I don't follow the amateur player rankings at all, so can someone tell me:

- How much variance is their between major industry publications' player ranking lists?

- Has anyone done a study on whether industry publication rankings have any value in terms of predicting future outcomes? Or are their one or two such publications that have better track records?

7th rounder is another CF.

DJ Artis, CF, Liberty U (VA) - MLB.com rank #136

A three-year starter at Liberty, Artis has probably had his worst season, statistically, in this, his junior season. But the speedy outfielder has shown enough where teams that covet college performers will still have interest in the top five rounds It's not that Artis, a two-time Cape Cod League player, has been bad this spring; it's just that he set the bar high by winning the Big South Conference's Freshman of the Year in 2016 and then Player of the Year in 2017. He's proven he can really hit, albeit from an unorthodox crouch from the left side of the plate. There is some raw power, but he doesn't tap into it consistently, focusing on line-drive contact and drawing a lot more walks than strikeouts. He's a plus runner who can handle center field with below-average arm strength, one who could one day hit near the top of a big league lineup. Even in his "down year," Artis has gotten on base at an impressive clip and stolen bases. That skill set, not to mention his track record, has kept him fairly high on Draft boards.

BA ranks him #149:

D.J. Artis 4YR OF

School: Liberty

Ht: 5-9 | Wt: 165 | B-T: L-L | Commit/Drafted: Red Sox '15 (40)

Scouting Report: A third-team BA All-American in 2017, Artis has been a steady three-year starter for Liberty with a strong college track record of hitting. A 40th-round draftee of the Red Sox out of high school, Artis is a no-doubt center fielder with plus speed, albeit fringy lefthanded arm strength. Scouts are more divided on Artis' offensive approach. The small-framed, 5-foot-11, 195-pound lefthanded hitter crouches unusually low at the plate, shrinking his strike zone. He pairs the stance with a noticeably passive approach, which has been effective at the college level. He led the country with a program-record 62 walks last season and placed second nationally with a .532 on-base percentage. This spring, he's slashed .305/.464/.489 through 190 at-bats. Despite his statistical track record, some evaluators are skeptical his approach will play at the next level. Artis has several moving parts in his swing, and his hit tool ranks over his mostly gap power. He has bat speed, but he could require some tweaking to fully unlock his offensive potential. However, with his speed and defensive ability, as well as his advanced plate discipline, Artis profiles as a speedy leadoff type with a fourth-outfielder floor.

I haven't seen anything like that. Part of the problem with the latter question is some of the folks who work in publications have moved on, either to MLB scouting departments or to other publications (such as Jim Callis from BA to MLB.com), so you can't fairly compare publication to publication.

I hope the Cubs pick up J.J. Schwartz or Bryce Montes De Oca as one of their senior signs.

Damn. A's picked Schwartz.

They probably aren't as cheap as your traditional senior signs but they would be good picks. Well, Montes de Oca still would be - I can imagine him moving quickly as a reliever.

I've been busy today and haven't been able to follow the draft. I should have reports tonight.

Yeah, I could see either playing Indy ball for a year if they only get offered $5K. But the Cubs don't need to underslot that much, or at least they shouldn't at this point.
