According to a report from ESPN, Cavaliers point guard Derrick Rose has taken a leave of absence from the team in order to re-evaluate his NBA future.

From ESPN:

Rose’s increasing frustration with injuries is causing him to consider his desire to continue playing in the league, sources said.

One team source told ESPN of Rose: “He’s tired of being hurt and it’s taking a toll on him mentally.”

How’s that lifetime contract working out for ya, Adidas?

Rose quit on the Bulls after his ACL injury, went AWOL on the Knicks last year, and might retire this year. His injuries have been incredibly sad and unlucky, but he’s still soft mentally.

but he’s still soft mentally

Rose is a goober, but calling a dude out for realizing he is basically now useless as a basketball player because injuries destroyed what made him valuable in the first place as being "soft" is super meatball-y.

As opposed to, what, he hangs around milking name-recognition contracts for a few more years? That's somehow a better choice that would make him seem less "soft?"

He’s quit on his team three times now. He’s on a one-year, vet minimum deal so he’s not milking anyone. He’s two weeks away from being back. Try to win a title this year and then retire.

The dude is terrible, on a pace to have the worst season of his career and can't stay healthy. He's not quitting on his team; he's doing them a favor. Why sticking around under those circumstances is somehow more admirable or tough than realizing you have nothing left and walking away, hell, I'll never know.

rose sucks but i'm not going to blame him for quitting or whatever. the amount of injuries he's had is insane, to the point where there are problem legitimate quality of life concerns. it's easy to say he should have just walked away earlier if he's checked out, but that's probably a pretty hard thing to give up on. he was just at the top of the field like 5 years ago,

he does suck though

with all the baggage that can come with pro athletes, it's hard for me to criticize a guy too much for being "soft" after suffering numerous serious injuries

He was soft after his first injury though. Doctors cleared him to play weeks before the playoffs, yet Rose refused to play.

I like you better when you're gone for months at a time

It's like people don't remember Rose healthy scratching himself for the playoffs after the first knee injury while Thibs was running Deng and Noah into the ground

Everyone remembers it: it's one of many reasons why people think he's a dopey weirdo.

I guess softness is something that comes and goes, coincidentally much like injuries. It's enigmatic, this softness.

Doctors employed by jerry reinsdorf

considering all he went through after the first time, maybe he was right to doubt his health

if he knew he was breaking down, why would he hurry to come back and play for a coach who was running players into the ground?
