What can be said? Going into the ASB down 5.5 wasn't ideal, but I and many others still thought playoffs were very attainable. What not many people saw coming was it would only take 2 weeks till they were in first.

The Cubs are in first place all alone by .001 % (I'm not sure if that is how the math works on that, but I'm going with it), and ladies and gentleman THE PROFESSOR IS BACK!

Last year during the crosstown series, Theo & Jed bought us a present (Chapman)... will they do it again this year? Preferably one with less baggage.

Someone said yesterday that the White Sox have had the 'crosstown cup' since 2012, which isn't technically true, FTR. I was reminded yesterday that we won it in 2013 (I think that was the year Dioner Navarro had a huge series against them). They've won/retained it each year since, though.

I think that's the only year we've ever won it since it was introduced. Not that the crosstown cup means anything at all, but i hate how if the series is a split, the defending team "wins" it. I mean that's fine that the cup is retained but I don't think it deserves to be celebrated on the field with photos etc if you split a series with the other team.

But again the crosstown cup is stupid, we have bigger fish to fry lol

Heyward since the break: .364/.400/.636/1.036, 5 XBH in 35 PA. If you told me Heyward would be in the general .750 OPS range for the season I would have taken it

You dare besmirch the Crosstown Cup? This is why White Sox fans hate Cubs fans.

Hah, I have a White Sox fan in our office that loves to point out that the Cubs may have won 103 games and the World Series, but they didn't have a perfect season because they didn't win the Crosstown Cup. I know he's saying that just to rile up Cubs fans, but honestly who even thinks of that?

Definitely. I think most everyone would take it. The one thing we're missing out on is his normal above-average walk rate. He hasn't quite been the on-base threat you'd hope from a fixed version of himself. I do wonder if it will go up naturally, though. He's swinging more this year, both on pitches in and out of the zone. But I think it might have to do with how pitchers are pitching to him.

Fangraphs has data from Pitch Info and Baseball Info Solutions. Baseball Info has him getting about the same amount of pitches in the zone as usual. But Pitch info -- which has a different view of the zone, which seems to be a little bigger from what I've seen -- has him getting more pitches in the zone than ever before. But, the key thing, in my opinion, is that he's getting 63.6% first pitch strikes. Last year's 55.1% was his previous career high. So it's been hard to get into favorable counts.

I'd guess that pitchers simply aren't afraid to pitch to him. And they're giving him more pitches in and around the zone -- especially early in the count to get ahead. Not as many chase pitches. More pitches that are tough to take. I think if he keeps hitting well, the first pitch strike % will go down and he'll start working some more walks and make his numbers look even better.

Sox fans who would probably rather sweep the Cubs but miss the playoffs rather than getting swept by the Cubs and making the playoffs.
