CCDT now has the Cubs officially signing 24 players with 4 more players expected to sign (and perhaps have but not announced officially), compensation pick Alex Lange, 6th rounder Nelson Velasquez, 7th rounder Jeremiah Estrada and 23rd rounder Brady Miller, a 6'2", 21-year-old RHP out of Western Oregon University.

Obviously in Estrada case, he can't sign till Lange does. That would be the mistake that Houston made couple summers back.

Source: @RaysBaseball will not sign supp 1st-rder Drew Rasmussen. Oregon St RHP, up to 98 this spring after TJ in March 2016. @MLBDraft

More re Rasmussen: @RaysBaseball will not make minimum offer to get compensation pick in 2018 @MLBDraft. Rasmussen will become a free agent.

Rasmussen also could return to Oregon State as a redshirt junior in 2018 if he doesn't sign as a free agent. @MLBDraft @RaysBaseball

-------So is this a failed physical? Any other reason and they'd make a minimum offer, right?

Maybe something off the field was discovered, kinda like how Heimlich became draft poison?

I'm not completely sure of the rule, but for some reason, I think they've got to offer him 30% of slot, in order to recoup the pick. My complete guess is they think that medicals change that, and don't want to offer him even that, thinking he'd accept.

Nice. According CCDT, it appears the Cubs will sign 24 of their top 25 picks with 14th round prep SS Luis Vazquez now indicating he will sign. The lone top 25 pick not to sign is another prep SS, 22nd rounder Skyler Messenger.

Assuming those marked as likely to sign actually do (and they will), the Cubs will have signed 29 of their 41 picks. It's a pretty experienced draft. Only 6 of the 29 are under 21 years old.

3 junior college pitchers

- 1st rounder LHP Brendan Little (20)

- 17th rounder RHP Peyton Remy (20)

- 24th rounder RHP Braxton Light

3 prep players (2 hitters, 1 pitcher)

- 6th rounder OF Nelson Velazquez (18)

- 7th rounder RHP Jeremiah Estrada (18)

- 14th rounder SS Luis Vazquez (17)

14 college juniors (8 pitchers, 6 hitters)

- 1st round comp RHP Alex Lange

- 2nd rounder RHP Cory Abbott

- 4th rounder RHP Erich Uelman

- 7th rounder LHP Ricky Thomas

- 11th rounder RHP Rollie Lacy

- 12th rounder RHP Ben Hecht

- 23rd rounder RHP Brady Miller

- 40th rounder RHP Jeff Passantino

- 8th rounder 3B Austin Filiere

- 13th rounder 2B Austin Upshaw (20)

- 15th rounder 2B Jared Young

- 16th rounder CF Brandon Hughes

- 19th rounder CF Chris Singleton

- 31st rounder IF Ramsey Ramano

9 college seniors (7 pitchers, 2 hitters)

- 3rd rounder RHP Keegan Thompson

- 10th rounder RHP Brian Glowicki

- 18th rounder RHP Casey Ryan

- 20th rounder RHP Brendan King

- 21st rounder RHP Sean Barry

- 25th rounder RHP Mitch Stophel

- 29th rounder RHP Jacob Steffens

- 9th rounder OF Chris Carrier

- 30th rounder 2B Cam Balego

With roughly 30 hours to go before the signing deadline, the only 3 players without any indication next to their names on CCDT are 27th rounder, junior college freshman RHP Darius Vines, 32nd rounder prep RHP Hunter Ruth and 34th rounder RHP Andrew Karp, junior out of University of Florida.

Both Ruth (135th) and Karp (253rd) were ranked by BA, so they're most certainly not signing. There's a very slim chance Vines could still sign, though we likely would've heard at least something by now. Vines is 6'1", 180 lbs and 19 years old. He was drafted in the 32nd round out of high school by the Astros last year.

Longenhagen: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/daily-prospect-notes-76/

The Cubs needed to wait for the College World Series to end before engaging in earnest, risk-free talks with LSU RHP Alex Lange and, as a result, some of the rest of the class has not signed as they wait for that first-round shoe to drop. Fifth and sixth rounders Nelson Figueroa, a thick-bodied high-school outfielder from Puerto Rico, and enigmatic SoCal RHP Jeremiah Estrada are unsigned. By my count, the Cubs have just over $3.1 million left to spend. Lange’s slot is $2.1 million. Figueroa and Estrada have $285K and $222K slots, respectively.

Tampa Bay made news by announcing they would not sign comp pick Drew Rasmussen, a hard-throwing righty from Oregon State who returned part of the way through this season after rehabbing from Tommy John. The Rays reportedly did not offer the minimum 40% of slot ($2.1 million) required to retain Rasmussen’s slot value as part of their pool.

That offer of 40% of the slot value is typically also required for the club to receive a compensation pick in the next year’s draft, but there’s a new provision within the CBA which might be allowing Tampa Bay to circumvent that. The new CBA states that the MLB Scouting Bureau invites the top-50 pitchers (evaluations theirs) in a given draft to take a voluntary MRI. If a prospect declines, teams no longer need to offer 40% of slot to receive a comp pick if the a doctor finds something wrong with the post-draft medical. I’m working to confirm that this is the case with Rasmussen, but it would explain why the buzz in the industry is that the Rays are getting a pick despite failing to offer the minimum. Some scouting sources with whom I spoke yesterday heard that some clubs moved Rasmussen down their boards due to injury concerns.

I don't THINK Karp will sign. But, he'll be a 4th year Junior after next year. And still is far from guaranteed he's even got a rotation spot next year. To me, he's a prime candidate to get, if there's ANY money left from Lange/Velázquez/Estrada.....

So if Lange took his physical Monday, why hasn't the signing been announced yet? Holding out for more cash than previously agreed upon? Did something pop up in the physical? Or am I just being paranoid?

I'd think there's just going to be one announcement for the rest of the class. I think we would have heard something, if anything was actually wrong.

Agree with Dave. The only other "conspiracy theory" option, other than injury, would be that the Cubs don't want to tell Estrada.

If they announce/leak what Lange gets, Estrada'a advisor might then be free to demand every dollar left. But if Estrada comes to terms and agrees and signs, and Lange is further under than Estrada could count on, that might free a few extra bucks for whatever use they might have.

Think I'd rather get a good 1st rounder. O well.

Well, me too. But, until we know the particulars, I'll stay positive and think its possible to get both out of this.

If there's an issue with his arm, I'd rather just take the comp pick next year and try again on somebody healthy.

I hope it doesn't kill off Velázquez and Estrada as well. That's a big chunk of draft talent.
