I keep flip flopping my opinion on this deal after reading all the takes. I think overall I am slightly down on the move and here is why:

This was all about calling the 49ers bluff. Maybe the Browns were really ready to deal, maybe they weren't. If you call SF's bluff and Cleveland really does have a strong offer on the table, the 49ers will lose the guy they supposedly really wanted in Solomon Thomas by moving down to 12. So maybe SF doesn't accept the Browns deal and takes Thomas.

For the Bears, if the Browns trade up and take Trubisky, oh well you still have 7 draft picks to fill the many holes this team still has, you still have a potentially decent starting QB in Glennon the next few years (who will be starting next year anyways). People are saying Trubisky is partially self-preservation for Pace because he won't start next year and might not start the year after, but I'm not sure you can keep Pace employed long enough to see how he pans out if this draft nets us no immediate impact talent, and now we have less bullets to get that talent.

I do like Trubisky as a player, I think he has the tools and has a high enough floor that he is probably going to end up no worse than an average starting QB. But I'm just not sure it was worth trading all those picks when there was a decent chance they could have gotten him at 3 and kept all their picks. I guess if Jacksonville was also involved it makes a little more sense for Pace to pull the trigger because Thomas might have fallen to 4.

if Pace though that Trubisky is simply a pro-caliber starting QB, then it doesn't make sense. But if Pace thinks Trubisky is a franchise QB, then it absolutely makes sense.

Additionally, it's not about calling bluffs. Pace didn't tip his hand as to who he was targeting, and most of the smoke was from the defensive side of the ball. The analysts were sure he traded up for Thomas, no mention of Trubisky at all. Pace was keeping quiet. So, did Pace just play a hunch that someone was trying to trade up for Trubisky? Did he operate based on rumor? or maybe, just maybe, did Cleveland/Houston/KC call him on the day of the draft or somewhere thereabouts, and inquire about a trade? I'm sure he got a call from someone and figured that they'd be calling the Niners, this was not the Niners lying.

I don't get the idea that it's too accepted to lie to other teams about offers, anyway. One can simply go to the source, find out your trade partner was lying and then that team's GM is branded as a liar and nobody wants to do business with him.

Yes if Pace thinks he's an all pro QB in the making then he did the right thing but even the best NFL scout cannot fully predict how QBs will turn out. So even if he's confident its the right pick it still might prove to be a big bust. All I'm saying is that if you don't make the deal and there was another team trying to get that pick, there's a decent chance that SF likes Thomas enough to not pull the trigger with a team like the Browns who have the 12th pick. If SF makes their pick then the Bears get Trubisky and keep the rest of their picks. If they do trade to Browns, then you still have a QB in place for the next few years and can either pick one later in the draft or next year. Not ideal, but neither is giving up 3 mid-round picks over the next 2 years when there was probably at least a decent chance that the guy you want is still there.

Melifonwu was a CB in college, right? he's as fast as a CB, and big like a safety. could he project at CB? Is it only his size that causes him to project at S?

No he was a safety in college. More FS than anything. He could project at CB. But he's definitely a safety, that can play some slot CB.

This is how I feel. Call their bluff. They have to balance getting their guy at 2, or going back to the drawing board at 12. Hell, KC was interested too and no way they were moving to 27 or whatever. I'd feel a lot better if the trade down and pick up a couple picks, but they'll still not get as good a player they would have had at 36 or 67.

what are the realistic trade back possibilities on our 2nd rounder?

Obviously these are all "if he's there" types of scenarios but:

Tampa (50) for Dalvin Cook

Seattle (58) for Kevin King (if they take OL at 34)

Bills (44), Cards (45), or even Browns (52) for Deshone Kizer/Davis Webb preference.

Steelers, Saints, Browns, or Cardinals trading up for QB?

i guess it's one of those things that'll be heavily dictated by how the situation plays itself out.

Yea, I'm not sure anyone trades up for Kizer, but maybe if he goes within the 1st three we can start the run.

Again, I'm not counting on anything.

Well, that was a disappointing sequence of events last night, in my opinion. I don't hate Trubisky, but I guess I didn't think he was worth the 2nd overall pick (much less spending 2 3rds and a 4th to boot).

Today, I hope they trade back with the 36 to get a later 2nd and a 3rd. Cooper Kupp is probably one of my favorite players in this draft. After seeing him play the past 4 years, his ball skills are second to none. At the FCS level in the past 15 years, the only WR I have seen as good as him would be Vincent Jackson (and he was technically D2 at the time).

Awuzie would be a good guy to develop into a starting CB over the next year or so. I guess we shall see what happens, but this draft so far has been underwhelming to me.

Pretty cheesy video, but he better really have been number 1 on all those guys boards to do that trade.

Yes but they all said number 1 QB on the board, not necessarily number 1 (or 2) guy on the board. Leads me to believe they were QB or bust in the 1st round which is exactly the type of drafting philosophy Pace has spent 3 years telling us he avoids.

possibly San Fran liked Thomas just enough to make the trade with the Bears, when the Browns may have been offering more in terms of draft value index or whatever.

I'm operating under the assumption that Pace got a call from the Browns/Texans/Chiefs checking into the availability of their pick and he wasn't just assuming everyone wanted the guy he had targeted.

That was my first thought too. My second thought is I'd feel more comfortable if Theo made that pick. Even if Theo doesn't know the difference between a football and a hockey puck.

The lack of contact bothers me more than anything. Used to Theo taking the thorough as horsefeathers approach.

Well, yea. I mean, hopefully he was also top 10 overall on everyones board too.

He retweeted Trubiskys tweet and apparently is going to call him "Rich"

Cliff notes because hes made like 50 tweets in the last 18 hours.

I miss out on so much because he got mad at me over a mildly negative reply to a Tweet of his about lebron's mental toughness
