I dont understand why the front office would prevent Zobrist from coming to camp all because of a possibility he may be traded. I cant imagine that would go over well in the clubhouse if that happened and the trade fell apart.

if there's any truth to it, i'd think of it less as "preventing" and more as doing him a courtesy. but i'm pretty doubtful of the idea that his absence means anything.

I also don't think Zobrist not being in camp yet has anything to do with a trade, but as someone said yesterday if they are working on sending him to a team that has spring training in Florida, it would be a courtesy not to have him come to AZ just to have to go to FL in a day or two.

Prediction - Bryce 10/320-350 to the Phillies by sometime tonight.

this is absolutely 10000000% happening and he is definitely 10000000000000000% not signing with the cubs and i'm definitely not trying to jinx anything in a reverse sort of way

For the record, there is a 0% chance Bryce signs with the Cubs. Everything is bad now. We will rue the day we decided not to sign him as we are mired in mediocrity for the foreseeable future.

I've often wondered how to get my childhood back. The Cubs are making my dreams come true.

Is Zobrist really going to be traded? He's like our 3rd or 4th best player...... :-k :-k

Well trading Zobrist would almost certainly be in service of getting a player of similar or better quality like Harper. In which case: Rizzo, Bryant, Baez, Contreras, Harper, and probably Schwarber are all likely to be equal or better to 2019 Zobrist, to say nothing of pitchers(Hendricks and probably at least 1 of Darvish/Q/Lester).

The only logical explanation at this point is Bryce really, really does not want to be a Philly and he is begging someone to save him.

If you're Philly, are you better off putting that money into Harper, or investing in some combo of Keuchel/Kimbrel/Gonzalez/??? instead

The answer is always the one elite guy when these questions come up

Even if the non-elite guys are on shorter deals?

Harper has averaged around 5 fWAR over the past 3 seasons

Keuchel/Kimbrel/Marwin have combined to average around 7.5 fWAR over the past 3 season.

And you wouldn't have any on the hook for a 10 year commitment.

yeah let's just add up the WAR of 3 guys and imply they're more valuable than one guy

what an oft-injured LHP post-30, a closer, and a utility guy have done on average over the past 3 years is not really that relevant in terms of what you can expect going forward

and even if you think harper is *just* a 5 war guy every season going forward, that means to hit the 7.5 war mark all you need to find 1.25 WAR out of a couple league minimum guys in the pen and rotation. so you'd much rather have harper, who has a 5-9 war range and then keep fishing to find some cheap young guys than a trio of dudes who *might at best* add up to 7.5 war

a good way of realizing how stupid the pecota projections are is to look at our roster with harper added and then realize they'd still have us like 3rd with 81 wins or something stupid like that
