How do you know they are choosing profit over talented players?

Telling someone to grow up? Sammys advice was dead on and your response proved it. You sound a little triggered.

But while we are back on the subject of telling people to compartmentalize their opinions of how the world works as if there is some kind of virtue in that...I mean, constantly harping on politics all the time can obviously get tiring, but pretending that walling off how certain things in our lives effect others is foolish at the least, and possibly dangerous. I especially disliked the part of Boombox's screed where he ends it with "can't do anything about it anyways." Well, at the very least, you can bitch to people on the internet about it, but be it politics or sport fandom, there are multiple obvious things to be done about it. If some guy on the internet finds it convenient to his lifestyle it to walk around with blinders about its different aspects, it doesn't follow that I should do the same, or that I should even respect it. Boombox is happy and fancies himself noble because he chooses to ignore negatives aspects of the world at his convenience. How nice.

Oh god the "centrists" are here.

Now I hope Bryce Harper goes to the Brewers except they loan him out to the Cardinals whenever they're playing us.

Good for the Brewers if they get him. You guys are pretending the Cubs haven't spent money on this team. They have the #1 payroll in the National League. The truth is, Theo and the baseball ops department are the problem because they HAVE been able to spend money, they've just spent it on mostly garbage outside of Lester. Jason Heyward, Tyler Chatwood, Yu Darvish. You only get so many bullets and you can't screw up that many big money signings. And if Theo knew that signing Darvish last year would hamper their search for free agents this year, that's an ever bigger f***-up than we think.

If by #1 in the NL you mean either 3rd or 4th, then sure, #1 in the NL.

I mean, I understand your general point that the Cubs have and spend a lot of money, but no need to keep repeating false claims.

One might argue, and current events would suggest, that when you have a bad argument there is a tremendous need to keep repeating false claims to make it sound better.

Cardinals are quiet...I don’t like it. Would hate to see them come in and sign Harper.

Other than the whole Goldschmidt thing?

So, even if you buy into everything you just said

Why wouldn't I?

what more do you want from the owner than what the Ricketts have been?

Simple: for them to spend more of their awful, awful money on the baseball team I am a fan of.

I don't care if the Cubs have the 4th, 3rd or highest payroll in the NL or all of baseball; if opportunities like this come around, I want the obscenely rich owners of my team to spend what it takes to get it done. I get absolutely nothing out of them having a larger profit margin, or being relatively more responsible with the baseball budget; in fact, we get the exact opposite, since they have shown they have zero qualms in increasing how hard we get blasted just trying to go see this damn team in person regardless of how much they do or don't spend. If we have to pay like they're spending FU money, then I want them actually spending FU money.

Can someone please post a link that proves that Ricketts put spending limits on the FO this off-season. Asking for a friend...

ooo ooo, I love these "reasonable doubt" posts that have nothing to do with anything.

This entire discussion is based on the theory that the Cubs drastically cut their expected budget and are no longer going to spend on players this offseason, something that has been reported by dozens of people. I think it's all bunk, myself.

Don’t feel like turning this into another political thread, but I’m very engaged and pay attention. I just don’t let it affect my whole day every day and can compartmentalize.

ah so you're white & straight

I really don’t understand hating the Ricketts. Like, aren’t we supposed to want the monopoly guy to own our team AND also be a fan who wants the team to win AND is smart enough to hire smart baseball people to be the ones to decide how to spend his money?

Not sure what more you could want in an owner to be honest with you.

You do realize that he financially supports Republican politicians?

You do realize that his daughter financially supports the Democrats? One of the top donors of right alongside Harvey Weinstein.

So I'd call it wash.

No. It's ok to support the Democrats.

Exactly, a theory. We'll see if it proves to be correct. None of us knows that answer, so let's see what happens. Like everyone else, I will be pissed if they don't spend money this offseason when they are in the middle of their window.

I'm surprised you didn't mention "privileged" too

What exactly is your point here? Are we not supposed to have a discussion until the final numbers are in? We can't talk about the offseason until the offseason concludes? We're talking about what has been reported, and the Cubs are very obviously pushing the narrative that they don't have any money.

That was implied. I already know your opinion but I'll ask it anyways, do you think white straight guys don't enjoy privileges? I mean, can you name a person who owns a baseball team that isn't a straight white guy? I can only think of one, and he spends more than PTR, and he supports a few progressive things, so to Boombox's other absurd point where he asks what more we could hope for out of an owner...

I guess what this selfishly comes down to is I want the Cubs to come storming into things like the Winter Meetings, and everyone is all, "WHOA, LOOK OUT, THE CUBS ARE HERE WITH THEIR MONEY TRUNCHEON." I want the Cubs to be the despised Midwest version of peak Steinbrenner Yankees. All of this, "we spend a lot of money, but we try to be coy about it AND we maybe scare easily from awesome signings when we get some turd signings" is lame.

Like, I don't want them to just keep chucking out Darvish and Heyward contracts left and right, but I don't want them getting scared from signing guys like Harper or Machado because dudes they spent on who came with pretty big red flags didn't or haven't really panned out yet.

Damn.

I'm starting to think some of you are privileged, white, baseball fans.

Most of us are!

For the record, I want Bryce Harper, too.

But let's just be grateful we all decided to be Cubs fans, because I imagine to small and mid market fans, we sound like some real spoiled bitches.

But that's just because their sucky owners are even suckier than the Cubs'. They're all just variations on the same sucky theme.
