I’m sitting at Giordanos right now just to spite all the pizza snobs

"Yes, I'll take your finest tacos, my good man."

“I’d like your best dish, stuffed with your second best dish”

“Lobster stuffed with tacos it is, sir”

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/bryce-harper-rumors-why-you-shouldnt-count-out-the-cubs-despite-supposed-budget-crunch/

Let's talk about the budget. The Cubs right now have an estimated 2019 payroll of $208.6 million per Baseball-Reference. The first-tier luxury tax of 20 percent kicks in at $226 million, but that's only on the overage. For example, if the Cubs run a $240 million payroll next season, they'd owe $2.8 million in tax. For a team swimming in cash, that's really not that much. Cubs blog Bleacher Nation ran a hypothetical payroll of $260 million and the tax on that is $19.15 million.

That’s it!!!!??!!

Yeah it’s not a lot or prohibitive to do it for 1-2 years. Davell ran the numbers on a post earlier in the offseason. As long as you avoid the top end repeater tax you don’t pay “that” much out. IIRC we’d pay $40-60 million in tax if we go over the top end the next 3 years consecutively and there’s clear ways to get under the top end next year and certainly in 2 years and even possibly reset then too.

No idea how that dude does math. Its 20% on 206-226, then you're taxed 32% on 226-240. So while its still not a ton, its 8.48 mill, if the payroll was 240.

Getting Bryce into 240 requires a lot of wiggling, but it is at least feasible.

Edit- That dude forgot a whole tier. The tax starts at 206, not 226.

So you're saying we can not afford Harper or pizza? LOL

Still doesn’t seem like much of a hurdle

Boooo Cubs

Hey, I agree completely FWIW. My honest guess is IF Ricketts has limited payroll, it's because of an uncertain TV deal that'll eventually work out just fine and shouldn't affect money available for Bryce.

I am very interested to see if any team jumps past 246 before the next CBA. If not, collusion becomes an extremely legit reality. Because teams are currently making money to where the oow end of the tax SHOULD be sitting at 275. And owners staying under 246 is to help them in the next round of CBA talks.

Hopefully we're just laying low.

If we’re colluding, Philly needs to help us offload Heyward’s contract and get Bryce. If you collude, everyone needs to collude together, or there’s no beepnefit to colluding, If not, we should take our collusion ball and go home, and sign Bryce anyway.

This tweet is a few days old, idk if it was posted during the exhilarating pizza talk, but I just saw it in an article on Bryce

I am uncomfortable with the silence. Not particularly on this issue, just in general. Don't worry, I'm seeing someone about it. The fact that I am now longing for pizza talk was my final clue.

Any chance anything happens at the winter meetings?

Remember how long it took last year for things to happen? I don't anticipate this going quickly at all.

I do, since it's a much larger FA class, and homeboy is basically setting the table, and it's why the relative lack of action/news is driving me bonkers.

Is Bryce gonna do a tour of various cities and get PowerPoint presentations like Lebron got in 2010 when he hit free agency? I don’t remember if baseball does that thing

I mean, we pretty much did that for Lester, so...

ETA and Ohtani last season.

depending on who you believe Bryce already met with the Cubs in Chicago.

I believe people that say things I like. I don't believe people that say things I don't like.

So I believe this.
