I don't think anyone outside of Kluber, Miller, or Allen are all that great. I just don't think it's a foregone conclusion that the Cubs should blow up Tomlin.

I don't think anyone is assuming the Cubs should blow up Tomlin, especially after Friday night. But they should hit him a bit. He was very good in his last game, but the Cubs did step well away from the approach that made them a top five offense. I just don't think he can hold us scoreless again.

This team was pressing soooooo hard at home. I feel like they'll hit in Cleveland.

Having Schwarber in there to "lengthen" the lineup as Joe just said in his presser, hopefully helps lessen pressure on other guys as well.

I know everyone keeps talking about the need to get to Cleveland's starters early to avoid Miller/Allen with a lead. But when the Cubs have a rally like they did tonight vs Bauer, it's critical it be a big one. Otherwise It's 2 or 3 and done. Seems they've been coming up one hit short from a breakout all series.

Fangraphs doesn't seem to have postseason stats, but for the September starts that Tomlin made, there wasn't an appreciable change in the frequency, velocity, or pitch value of his curve. I'm not going to rule out that he made some adjustment, but considering 4 of those starts were against the White Sox and Royals offenses, I'm skeptical that Tomlin is a different pitcher than he was before. Is he in good form? Clearly. But I don't yet see a compelling reason that we should throw out his past. And he's going on short rest.

Does that fact that he only threw around 60 pitches or so negate the short rest thing or no?

Lester always seemed a tad unlikable (to me at least) but he's pretty much negated that between his awesome pitching and the stuff he's said tonight in his interviews has been cool as hell. Now he's coming across as pretty bad ass to me.

about the same amount his hot stretch negates the rest of his career

60 pitches is better than 100, but it doesn't negate the effect of short rest. You still have to exert a lot of energy to warm up and throw 60 pitches, to come back and throw another 60-80 after 3 days when you've been doing so on 4 or more days your entire career means you aren't going to be quite as sharp. It also helps to understand the razor's edge that pitchers have to walk, especially pitchers with Tomlin's stuff/profile. You can be the same guy for 75 of the 80 pitches but one curve that doesn't bite and one fastball that catches too much plate can be the difference in 0 runs and 4, especially against an offense with the Cubs' capabilities.

I wonder how the pitch count will effect chapman. 1 days rest after throwing 42 pitches all in high stress situation.

That's like half a start, but some someone not stretched out for that many pitches fatigue probably has more of an affect on him after that outing

Was coming in to post that I thought Ross should get the start in game 6. If not for the tagging / defense advantage Javy provides, I'd sit him and move zobrist to 2B. Javy needs to chill at the plate. . . .waaaaaay too amped.

I never understood the "unlikable" deal with Lester. He's a red ass on the mound but ultra-competitive and he's not Lackey bitching at everyone. By all accounts he's a good teammate and pretty laid back guy when he's not pitching.

Yeah, and take this for what it's worth: something coming from a guy who never even pitched in Little League. I really don't have a clue how it would affect him. But, like TT is saying, it's not just the 60 pitches. It's the whole gameday routine -- the bullpen before the game, pitches between innings, sitting down and getting back up and pitching. 60 certainly seems better for him than 100. But he still went through the whole routine and he did exert himself by throwing even as few as 60 pitches.

And I feel like this matters too: A pitcher is conditioned to throw upwards of 100 pitches. I don't think there's much in there between 60-100 that changes things all too much. That's why when you read stuff about pitcher abuse, everyone is always worried about pitches 120 and up, or wherever you draw the line -- somewhere over 100. It's because guys aren't used to doing that. They aren't conditioned to do that. And they are probably fatigued by then. That can lead to problems with mechanics and release point and consistency in what you are doing.

Nobody's concerned about 60-100, because that stuff's all normal. What's key here is that he did throw 60. And he is on short rest. The short rest is the more important thing. That's the thing that's unusual for him. And I don't think it matters too much if it was only 60 or if it was 100. But I could be full of horsefeathers.

I want Ross starting game 6.

Totally agree.

game 7 too

Yeah I think I'd ride him out. Contreras could chill out at the plate but right now I'm more comfortable with Rossy.

From the thread when the playoff schedule was announced...

Well game 7 of the World Series is on my birthday, I want the Cubs to win the WS in less than 7 but if it went 7 what a nice present that would be.

how about they wrap it up early and the parade is on our birthday?

Well buddy, we're close and our birthday will be

A) The day after the Cubs lose the World Series

B) The day the Cubs lose the World Series

C) THE DAY THE CUBS WIN THE WORLD SERIES!

I know what I'm pulling for, and if the game is anything like the one tonight it might kill me.
