2 hours ago it looked likely the Marlins would have a 2 game lead over the Cardinals in the WC when the Marlins were up 5-1 and the Cards down 4-0. Now it seems likely that the end the night tied with the Cards winning and Giants having bases loaded 1 out in the 11th

I know the talent is near non existent in their bullpen but Brian Price's bullpen management that inning cost them just as much as their lack of talent

good, i'm fine with them winning a wild card

Why? I'd much rather the Marlins take that spot. I can't handle another Cardinals Cubs series. The Cubs are the clear better team but as discussed ad nauseum the advantage is like 55-45

In other news Buster Posey had one of the worst slides I've ever seen tonight. He literally slide face first into 3B and the Giants announcers are hell bent on blaming it on the dirt and won't admit it was just a really terrible slide as to not besmirch Posey's good name. Their Posey love/defense is right up there with the Cardinals blind love/defense of Yadi

Out of the 4 teams seriously vying for an NL wild card, I'd prefer the Cards and Marlins to any other permutation. I'd most like Marlins/Pirates, but I feel like I've nearly written Pittsburgh off.

A non Kershaw Dodgers or at least non Kershaw game 1 in the NLDS Dodgers doesn't scare me. I probably prefer them the most in the DS. At the end of the day, it's the playoffs yada yada, and even the worst team in is still going to be decent and the games are more likely to be close than not. Just try not to suck. I agree Cards and Marlins are the 2 worst of the realistic candidates but the difference between the Cardinals and another team is not worth the emotional risk of another Cards-Cubs series. I prefer smooth sailing and saving my emotions for winning the World Series

I suppose you have a point, but I have have zero fear of the Cardinals right now. Though the playoffs are the playoffs, and if by some act of satanic intervention they were to eliminate us, that would be crushing. But otoh, bouncing their asses for a second straight year would be oh so gratifying.

Posted
Opportunity to bounce them again is worth the risk of the outside chance that they beat us. At least for me.

But is it an outside chance? Isn't the prevailing theory that even a team that's significantly better only about a 55-45 favorite in a short series? Maybe I bought in too hard to the playoffs are a crapshoot thing.

55/45 is probably being generous in a 5 game series.

Yeah I don't want to see the Cardinals again. Beating them last year was immensely gratifying, but now the tables have flipped and instead of us playing them with house money (I was happy enough to be in the playoffs, win the Wild Card game and play a team that many considered better than us), they'd be the underdog and it would be perceived to be an immense disappointment if we lost. I just want all that messiness gone away with.

We should all root for the Rockies to make the playoffs.

Ah, I understand wanting to safe path to the final goal. But I love the thrill you get when it is a series full of games that you would barely be able to stomach losing. Makes the wins better.

And I get the whole crapshoot thing, a very persistent voice in the back of my head will keep reminding me of it while I'm watching the games in October.

I'm still going to go into every series confident that the better team should win, and I think the Cubs will be that better team against pretty much everyone. Bring on the Cards or anyone else.

That's probably what most of us would look like if we tried a headfirst slide.

I'm not arguing that, but to say that's anything other than a shitty slide is being a pretty big apologist. Especially when you are blaming it on the horsefeathering dirt.

Well, at least Posey actually is an awesome player.

As per usual, Asian baseball players do it with much more flair:

I'd rather see the Cards in the playoffs than the Mets.

I'd rather see neither. Those are 1a and 1b of teams I absolutely do not want to lose to.

I'd rather lose to the Mets than have Dusty Baker go to the World Series by beating the Cubs. Cards are No. 1 though.

I don't need any extra incentive to have my stomach doing flips for a playoff game. I think I took years off my life in the NLDS last year. I never want to see the Cardinals in the playoffs again. If we faced them 5 times in the playoffs and won 4 of them I would still be so pissed about the one time they beat us. I never want to know what it is like to lose a playoff series to those people.
