How does Coghlan help us more than La Stella? This move doesn't make any sense to me, someone smarter than me please tell me why this is ok.

calling up coghlan and optioning lastella allows the team to keep both lastella and coghlan, while not calling up coghlan means they'd have to release him after his DL stint (a healthy vet can't be stashed for very long)

I have to believe it is short-term.

I'm sure Maddon or the FO will be asked about this pre-game.

I see that, but La Stella being a lot better helps us win more games now. Just DFA Coghlan. He's scrap heap material.

I guess I don't mind it, LaStella will be back soon and likely on the playoff roster. Give Coghlan an audition to see if he can regain what he did last year. If he sucks he's gone. Plus it seems like Bryant hasn't been playing much OF lately and with how well Baez is playing the IF is crowded giving LaStella little room for playing time. Edited by Cubswin11

I'd probably prefer that one as well but GMs like to wait until the last minute before they make decisions that cannot be undone.

But seriously, usually the answers to those questions are something like: "Obviously he's a little disappointed but he took it as well as can be expected given the circumstances"

"not well" means he was pissed off.

Well after missing almost all of last year, he's probably pretty angry he's getting sent down so Joe can have his Neifi back. He's clearly out performed several guys on this roster.

Would LaStella for Reddick be a fair trade?

Billy may value a guy like him fairly decently. But my guess is most teams would prefer some upside low level arm types to him.
