I probably hated that Cubs team too...yikes.

how can one hate a team where Darwin Barney led in WAR (4.6) ?

I had no [expletive] clue Darwin Barney had a 4.6 win season. That is simply beyond the realm of comprehension even if 2/3rds of it was defensive.

We should have sold high on him instead of making him 'part of the core' temporarily.

That makes me question the usefulness of WAR.

I see this senior pitcher, Duncan Robinson, is also from Dartmouth. Are they trying to replicate some "Kyle Hendricks" type magic lol? I'm pretty sure this guy isn't much of a prospect, but they probably said the same thing about Hendricks...

I would love to have another K. Hendricks-type pitcher in the system!

Seems like we got some decent arms, no? A couple bullpen guys and a few safer picks with lower ceilings, but without knowing much about any of these guys... it looks alright for the position we were in.

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today made their first eight selections in the 2016 First-Year Player Draft, including third-round pick, right-handed pitcher Thomas Hatch out of Oklahoma State University. The third and final day of the draft is tomorrow with rounds 11-40.

Hatch, 21, is in his redshirt sophomore season at Oklahoma State, pitching to a 2.16 ERA (27 ER/112.1 IP) and a 7-2 record in 16 starts, including three shutouts. He has allowed just two home runs, walked 28 and struck out 102 batters, becoming the 13th pitcher in OSU history to reach the 100-strikeout mark in a single season.

Hatch, recommended by area scout Ty Nichols, was named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year and was named to the All-America Third Team by Baseball America. He shut out three-straight opponents – TCU, Texas and Prairie View A&M – to become just the 10th pitcher in Big 12 history to record three shutouts in a season.

Hatch was selected by Colorado in the 32nd round of the 2013 Draft out of Jenks (Okla.) High School, but did not sign. OSU this weekend plays South Carolina in the NCAA Columbia Super Regional.

The Cubs in the fourth round selected right-handed pitcher Tyson Miller out of California Baptist University. He went 9-3 with a 2.27 ERA (27 ER/107.0 IP), two complete games, one shutout and one save in 16 games (15 starts) for Cal Baptist this season. Miller pitched for Brewster in the Cape Cod League in 2015, in which he recorded a 1.44 ERA (4 ER/25.0 IP) and a 0.88 WHIP. Miller was recommended by area scout Alex Lontayo.

Through their first eight picks, the Cubs have selected seven right-handed pitchers and one catcher, all college players.

The Cubs this year surrendered their first and second round selections due to the free agent signings of right-handed pitcher John Lackey and outfielder Jason Heyward, both of whom rejected qualifying offers from St. Louis.

Here is a look at Chicago’s first eight selections from the 2016 First-Year Player Draft:

Miller is excited and heading to Arizona to sign his contract and take his physical in the next few days, via quotes Yags has already found.

Yags doing his thing again on the draft signings. Solid amount of updates already.

Thanks, davell. Always loved tuning in to Yags' site after the draft is done. Had actually forgotten about it with the major league team distracting me (and the lack of the top two picks).

In the article Yags has linked for Ridings, they dropped the "3" from his number of walks making him sound much more impressive...

Ridings posted a 6-3 record with a 2.62 ERA in 11 starts. He struck out 87 and walked just seven in 68.2 innings to earn second-team all-conference honors and lead the Fords to the conference title and a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament.

In actuality, Ridings walked 37 batters. They also failed to mention the 10 hit batsmen and 13 wild pitches. Nothing quite like your hometown paper, I guess...

Draft Tracker isn't loading new picks for me, but based on conference call:

Round 11: Michael Rucker 6-1 195"

BA #251, MLB.com not listed

BYU RHP

Per Baseball Draft Report:

Michael Rucker checks two of our three boxes pretty easily: he’s 88-94 (96 peak) with his fastball while commanding three offspeed pitches (low-80s SL, low- to mid-80s CU, mid-70s CB) with a veteran’s mindset on the mound. He’s not particularly big (6-1, 185) nor does he have that plus offspeed pitch (slider comes closest), but it’s still a potential big league starter skill set

9th round pick is a college senior.

Not sure if they're saving money for a pick tomorrow or some of the guys today.

Guessing it was the latter moreso than the former. Gotta think Hatch has some leverage as a red-shirt sophomore. Hope I'm wrong.

It's a nice crop of arms considering the dynamics of this draft. I guess I'm expecting some college positional players today, guys to fill out the depth chart. Too lazy to check right now, but if Daniel Pinero hasn't gone, he might be an interesting guy to fit in.

Encouraging projection for Mekkes from Fangraphs

314. Dakota Mekkes, RHP, Chicago (NL)

Proj. WAR thru age-27: 3.8

Mekkes is KATOH’s favorite player in the draft. You read that right: Mekkes receives the highest WAR forecast of any draft-eligible player for whom I have a projection. Mekkes carved up Big 10 hitters by striking out 96 batters in just 57 innings without surrendering a single homerun. Yes, he pitched exclusively in relief, but he averaged nine batters faced per appearance. He wasn’t a one-inning reliever like many other college relievers. I imagine the 6-foot-7 righty will move quickly through the Cubs’ system. I’m quite surprised Mekkes fell as far as he did.

Two RS SO in the top 10 will be interesting. Like TT and Cal were saying, it'll be interesting how they structure the offers. Miller in the 4th sounds like he's already accepted an offer. Perhaps an underslot for 5th round money?
