Serena Williams is breaking down mentally during the women’s us open final. This is hard to watch.

She was penalized for breaking her racket and calling the referee a “thief.”

Yeah, that was absurd. They showed the replay of the exchange and she didn’t even say “effing thief”. Umpire needs to know the situation. I know the code violations escalate and that was the third one but still. That was so minor. Just let it go.

Plus the coaches coach during every match so the first violation was BS also.

I don't watch enough tennis to know if all that was warranted (at least in the moment. Twitter pretty quickly unanimously agreed that the umpire was insane), but man, I felt so bad for Osaka. That should've been the greatest moment of her life and it was just completely overshadowed.

I wonder if it's anything like baseball, where you can swear as much as you want, but you can't use any form of the word "you." "You're a thief" would get you tossed much quicker than a long string of tirades.

I'm gonna split the difference and say that Serena was out of line and deserved all those penalties, but that if she was a white male star she would have gotten the star treatment on two of them.

Umpire should not have penalized Serena for getting advice during a Grand Slam, but he’s the Joe West of tennis chair umpires. Rafa has had issues with him too. It’s not a sexist issue. And Serena was getting beaten pretty soundly at the time anyway.

Federer and Djokovic in the 5th set at Wimbledon.

That was epic but boy did Federer ever blow it. Up 5-3 in the 1st set tiebreak and he loses 4 straight points including a couple bad errors. Then two match points in the 5th set at 8-7 (I think) and he can’t convert.

That one will sting for him for a while.

This match is great.

it was unbelievable. medvedev is no joke but nadal is a horsefeathering beast.

Yeah, hopefully this is just the start of a run for him because he showed something today. The fight back from 2-0 down to force a fifth and then even in the fifth, Nadal breaks him twice and he gets one right back. These young guys haven't really shown much in the majors yet so it was good to see. Too many early exits from them. Thiem is the one who actually has broken through but he hasn't done much outside of the French.

I guess it's not unusual for a player to be defaulted for doing something like that, but I've never seen it happen before. The men's draw is wide open with Djokovich now out and Nadal, Federer, Del Potro, Wawrinka, Zverev, Kyrgios, and Monfils joining him. There's no on left in the men's draw who has won Grand Slam.

Novak wins Wimbledon for his 20th major (3rd Wimbledon victory in a row) and is now tied with Nadal and Federer at 20 grand slams. Only two people have ever held all four men’s major singles titles in a calendar year and none since Rod Laver in 1969. He’s going to be the goat in September. Edited by Wilson A2000

Yeah, sheer volume he's going to blow past the other two. Federer's not going to win another one and Nadal couldn't even win the French this year.

Hilarious that we spent a decade debating Nadal or Federer as the GOAT and the correct answer was neither. And unless Rafa wins a couple more on non-clay surfaces, he's relegated to #3 for me.

Nadal vs Federer for #2 is a good debate. Federer is the more complete player, but Nadal is up 24-16 (10-4 in grand slams) in the head-to-head rivalry.

Nadal is up in the H2H in part because after he started winning majors, he wasn't good enough to make the finals on hard court while Roger was waiting in the finals. So if he wasn't good enough to beat random dudes not named Roger Federer on hard court, he wasn't going to beat Roger Federer on hard court. From the 05 US Open through the 08 US Open, there were 6 times they were seeded 1-2 in the bracket and didn't meet in the final. 1 time neither made the final and the other 5, Federer made it but Nadal didn't. So while H2H credits Nadal for having the edge on Federer, it doesn't fault him for losing to far inferior players. On the other hand, Federer lost to Nadal four straight years in the French (semis once, finals three times).

It's picking nits, I know, but when you're comparing two all time greats who are pretty evenly matched, that's that you have to do. And if we're talking greatest ever, I prefer the all around player over the more one-dimensional player. Nadal is the best player ever on a single surface and it's not even close. I can't fault anyone for putting Nadal over Federer though. You can make a good case either way.

Federer is the G.O.A.T. with Nadal being a close second. Djokovic is like their weird stepbrother with the goofy haircut.

What if Djokovic ends up with 25 majors?
