Which level is going to be the most interesting this year?

My dark horse candidate for this year is Rasheed Crawford ( I hope I have the spelling). I liked his swing when I saw him in the NWL. I think it was Boise. They were playing Hillsboro.

South Bend with their outfield (Jimenez, Dewees, possibly EJM) and rotation (De La Cruz, Steele, Sands, eventually Cease).

Some predictions:

Iowa:

Contreras

Edwards Jr.

Almora

Candelario

Williams?

Vogelbach

Hannemann

Yawnson

Tenn:

Underwood

Caratini

McKinney

Williams?

Zagunis

Blackburn

MB:

Torres

Clifton

Stinnett

Morrison?

SB:

Jimenez

Happ

Kellogg

Sands

de la Cruz

Dewees

Steele

Paulino

Twomey

Morrison?

Too lazy to keep thinking of more.

Underwood will start off in extended but probably will end up in Tennessee as you said. I expect Happ will start the year at Myrtle Beach. Hannemann in Tennesseez Ryan Williams is with Iowa so that sounds like a good guess.

Will be interesting to see if Eddy Julio Martinez starts off in South Bend.

I think when the Cubs farmed Candelario they assigned him to Tennessee. Is that just a procedural formality, and has no bearing on where he'll start?

I assumed that meant he'd actually start at Tennesse.

I always thought he'd start in Tennessee this year, too. He's performed well this spring and in the AFL last fall, so that might impact the Cubs decision but this FO has been pretty consistent (unless you're an elite prospect) wanting players to get as close to 500 PAs per level as they can justify before promoting someone. Candelario only had 182 PAs at the AA level last season, is still young for his league and there's no urgency with him given the presence of Bryant and Rizzo in the bigs.

If I had to wager, he'll start in Tennessee.

Assuming Candelario will start in AA, I see the likely rosters looking something like this:

AAA

Contreras - C

Vogelbach - 1B

Alcantara - 2B

Kawasaki...? - SS

Dent...? - 3B

Almora - CF

Andreoli - RF

...and a veteran guy like Victorino plus whoever decides to sign a minor league contract from the NSI list.

P. Johnson

Williams

Fife

They've been starting Drew Rucinski (sp?) this spring and whoever else with the possibility of using Edwards as a swing man.

In the pen there'd be a lot of veteran depth guys with some major league experience like Patton and Acevedo and some of the NSI guys (Gomes, etc.). Hold overs like Rivero and (I'm hoping Felix Pena) could be there, too.

AA

Caratini - C

It was going to be Rogers but they just cut him, so for now I guess who's on first

C. Young - 2B

Penalver - SS

Candelario - 3B

McKinney - LF

Hannemann - CF

Zagunis - RF

Underwood

Blackburn

Tseng

Skulina

Markey

I've heard Torres has been throwing exclusively from the pen this season.

After that, Berg and Pugliese are likely but it's a mish-mash. Peralta?

High-A

Amaya/Remillard...? - C

Balaguert - 1B

Happ - 2B

Torres - SS

Vosler - 3B

and then some combo of Burks, Crawford, Martin, Baez and Dunston.

Clifton

Null

Stinnett (though I really think he will do a lot better out of the pen eventually)

Likely one or more of last year's college arms (Kellogg, Morrison, etc.)

Low-A

Lots of options, but PJ Higgins has been looking very good at C this spring. He's a recent conversion so ExST might be in order.

Rose - 1B

This was going to be Delarosa, but now... Sepulveda has been hitting well this spring but that'd be skipping a level... - 2B

Monasertio or Son...? - SS

Paula - 3B

Dewees - LF

Martinez (eventually if not to start the year)- CF

Jimenez - RF

Cease (eventually in order to limit IP)

De La Cruz

Steele

Sands

Alzolay

Araujo will close.

ExST

There are a lot of interesting names to follow. 17-year-old defensive wiz Miguel Amaya at catcher. Chris Pieters OF-1B. Carlos Sepulveda at 2B. Isaac Paredes at SS. Wladimir Galindo - 3B. DJ Wilson in CF. Bryan Hudson - SP. Other arms include Jose Albertos, Erling Moreno, Javier Assad and Junior Marte.

I'm sure I'm wrong on a lot of these, but that's my best guess right now.

A little surprised that more of the big money IFA signings aren't in EXST. Ademan, Sierra, Perlaza, Marquez, Henderson Perez, Yunior Perez, Morel and Gutierrez are all still currently slated for the DSL, per AZPhil.

Tennessee's pitching doesn't look all that interesting to me, but Candelario, McKinney, Zagunis, Caratini, Hanneman should be worth following, at least until Jeimer and McKinney get promoted.

Markey is definitely one to watch. Tseng at age 21 in Tennessee is worth keeping an eye on too, but he projects as a back-end of the rotation type, right? That's a little hard for me to get excited about. Blackburn is intriguing too, so I guess there are a few pitchers that merit following.

Black in his third season in Tennessee is really not of any interest to me. Concepcion has a lot of poor performance to make up for before I pay any attention to him. I'll admit I don't know much about Garner, but the strikeout numbers look pretty nice throughout his minor league career.

No Cease? Did he make Hi A or is he at exst?

He'll probably start late to limit his innings.

Yep.

No De La Cruz, guess Arizona Phil is right that he's injured. Pretty happy to see EJM make South Bend.

The infield looks a little bleak, but that's a fuuun outfield and rotation.

Nice to see Sepulveda make the jump. He's got a good bat and approach. Interested to see how it plays in the MWL.

I know that's what camp he got demoted to, but I'm still a little surprised Candelario isn't going to Iowa. I guess he is only 22 all year.

That and he only had 182 PAs at AA last season. I suspect if he dominates in his first 120 PAs or so, he could get a quick promotion.

That may have been recently updated. AZPhil posted that INF Aramis Ademan, INF Jhonny Bethencourt, RHP Hector Garcia, OF Jose Gonzalez, RHP Jose Leidenz, 3B Rafael Mejia, SS Rafael Narea, LHP Pablo Ochoa, LHP Eugenio Palma, SS-2B Yeiler Peguero, SSF Yonathan Perlaza, OF Ruben Reyes, OF Abraham Rodriguez, RHP Andri Rondon, and OF Jonathan Sierra have been called up to participate in ExST. It was originally reported that there'd be a total of 18 so there may be 3 more to come.

4th starters are Sands, Leal, Skulina, and Pierce Johnson, according to Az Phil.

http://www.thecubreporter.com/04042016/baez-and-victorino-action-riverview#comment-form

Skulina has apparently been behind, for whatever reason.

I'm assuming for South bend the other four starters will come from Steele, Morrison, Kellogg, Twomey, and Alzolay. I wonder if they'll piggy-back a couple of them, or if not which works relief? Or maybe Norwood will do some rotation work, too?

Anybody know or want to guess 5th starter for myrtle? I'm assuming Stinnett, Martinez, and Clifton, although even there you never know; perhaps Martinez is reaching the point where they decide to move him to relief. Arguello says Torrez is moving to relief. If so, that leaves one open spot, between the Zach Hedges, Ihrig, Thorpe types. I'm curious how Ryan McNeil will do this year, another year out from the surgery now, and throwing fairly hard into the mid 90's. I have a secret and unrealistic hope that he'll be in the rotation, having built up his arm strength and workload last year, but I don't think that's going to happen.

Good relievers are invaluable, and can emerge unexpectedly, so if a cat like McNeil, Torrez, Garner, or Norwood, or Conway emerging, or Maples mysteriously finding some control, or Paniagua mysteriously finding control, or Acevedo mysteriously finding some control, that would be cool. Wildman-ultra Black is presumably beyond any chance to ever find some control, but I suppose if I'm entertaining ridiculous wildman-mysteriously-finding-some-control dreams, I guess I could throw Black into that pool too. Heh heh, if I'm going ridiculous enough to imagine Black having a clue where his fastball is going, then I suppose I might as well add Scott Frazier to my list as well! :)

Tom, Phil's roster listing has Jordan Brink with rehab group. So whatever his arm problems, they appear to have recurred.

Yeah, I jumped the gun with my whining. Looks like the only big 2015-16 IFA signings still in the DSL are Henderson Perez, Brailyn Marquez, Yunior Perez, Jose Gutierrez and Christopher Morel, who is rehabbing some injury. And as you mentioned, 3 more are expected which could easily be one or more of these names.

Doesn't South Bend use a 6 man rotation? Probably as the year goes on and the college guys move up they go back to it?

They go the first month or two with 6-man rotations and then kind of end up with a 5-man after that due to injuries, promotions, etc.
