Tiger officially back tomorrow in the Hero Wold Championship and the field is pretty loaded, Spieth, Reed, Bubba, Rose, Stenson, DJ and many others are in it. Will be interesting to see how he does.

Misses the cut...blames it on an injury...doesn't play for a few more months.

I don't think there's a cut, there's only like 20 guys in the tournament. Overall he looked pretty good today, got into some horsefeathers but considering it's his first round back hopefully there's some things starting to click for him. A moderately competitive, and healthy, Tiger is good for golf. I just hope he can play a full schedule this year, win 1-3 tournaments, have a few top 10 finishes in others and challenge for 1 of the Majors (I think it's too much to expect him to win one but maybe lead going into a Saturday and finishing top 12 would be fun).

Yeah I didn't realize this was a charity thing and not a really real tourney.

But he show a 7 under 65 today. Apparently it's an easy course, but still...Tiger being competitive would be great for golf.

Justin Thomas just shot a 59 at the Sony Open in Hawaii. I don't think there's ever been so much great, young talent in golf before. This upcoming season should be a lot of fun.

RIP Crying Jordan

Somehow I missed this post when it was originally posted. My wife saw this somewhere, and thought it was hilarious, and set it as the wallpaper on my phone. Terrifying.

For those who know more about golf than I do...

What would happen if a Lexi Thompson type situation had happened on Sunday? A golfer commits a penalty during the round on Sunday but nobody notices and they win the tournament by a stroke or two. If someone emails/calls in hours later to report that a rules violation occurred, would they take the win away?

Good question. The Masters has a lot of officials (At least 3 on each hole) so it's pretty unlikely that something goes unnoticed. Also, a lot more people are watching the Masters so if someone watching at home noticed something, they would have already called in by now.

IIRC... once the player sign and turn in their scorecard over in that tent after the round is final. Otherwise the player would be DQ because he signed a lower score on that hole (if a penalty occurred).

I believe, in this case, that the player would still win because PGA will be like, "Yes, this player made a penalty on this hole, but nobody caught it before he turned in his card so the score stays the same." A lucky break type of deal unless they can somehow prove the player knew of the penalty and didn't account for it then he's DQ and lose the win.

Golf is weird in that players are in charge of penalizing themselves. So if the player signed a scorecard with a score lower than what it should be they would be DQ. The PGA doesn't have to prove that the player didn't know it was a penalty. The players are supposed to know the rules. They can't claim ignorance.

What they would do is tell the player that someone said they should be penalized and adjust their scorecard before they turn it in. In a major tournament, the type of people that live for that horsefeathers are all watching and will call in immediately. That's the difference with the Lexi Thompson situation- not as many people are watching some random women's tour event.

Yes, the players are supposed to know the rules, but there's so many rules. There's a ton of stupid or random rules/penalties that hardly anyone know about. Then they add, change, and remove rules every year so it's hard to keep track. It's why we keep seeing Lexi, that Anna girl at US women open, Dustin Johnson, Tiger a few years ago, etc all hit with penalties that they didn't even know or notice they committed. And these people do golf for a living.

And 99% of the penalties that are called in are reported to the player that day and they adjust their scores then. What soccer was asking is what if it happened AFTER he's done with the tournament and the card is already turned in? I know it was Lexi's 3rd round when it happened and was penalized in the final. She got 4 penalty strokes (2 for the penalty then 2 for incorrect scorecard- so I guess that somewhat answer that question). She was still playing at that time. LPGA also fumbled this as that penalty should have not took that long. She should been told before her final round that she was going to be penalized and it's on her 3rd round score instead of being told on like the 13th hole or whatever. Why would you wait that long?

Then again, I'm in the camp that nobody should be able to call/email in for this stuff. I'm fine with PGA having like an official group where they watch the cameras to look for that kind of stuff, but no random Joe blow should be able to call in.

Think of it this way. If a player breaks a rule and someone watching at home notices, it's probably not a very obscure rule. It seems like when this happens it's something where the player isn't paying attention. For example, a player a few years ago dipped his club in a water hazard to clean off the mud from his last shot. This meant he grounded his club in a hazard which incurs a penalty stroke. Had he handed the club to his caddy who then dipped it into the water there wouldn't have been a penalty.

I think what we'll see is a rule change that establishes a limit on how long before they will no longer asses after the fact penalties.

Interesting that you used that example. I had to give a penalty stroke to one of my junior high kids in a match last year for doing the exact same thing because another coach saw him do it and thought he was actually getting ready to hit. I know a lot of people weren't happy with me giving that penalty out.

golf is fun, golf rules are dumb, golf rule callers-in are pathetic lumps of rancid meat.

How do you get to a place in your life where you're watching a sporting event with the hope that you see somebody break a rule so you can snitch via telephone? Probably the same people that comment on youtube videos.

Especially because they call in the most innocuous things like a ball accidentally moving 1/4 of a revolution or Tiger dropping a foot or so from where he technically should've in the fairway. It's not like they are calling in catching Judge Smails kicking his ball 20 feet forward from out of the woods to the fairway.
