I have no idea why Cespedes is getting 3 years in a world where Ian [expletive] Kennedy gets 5.

Agreed, this is a helluva deal for the Mets. Crap.

He's making the 2nd highest single season salary ever this year plus gets the opt out. He apparently had longer/higher total deals out there.

At the start of the offseason, and especially after the Price and Greinke deals, who would've thought Heyward would sign for less than $200 million, Upton for less than $140, AND neither Gordon nor Cespedes even reach $100 mill.

He got more money over 3 than Kennedy did over 5.

So? Hitting over pitching, to begin with. I guess there's a chance he turned down Detroit at the same money Upton got, for the opt out after 1.....But I'd have taken the Upton deal.

27.5 is the 2nd highest single season salary ever?

For a position player, yes.

Hitting over pitching has never played itself out in the FA market.

It's just really misleading to say Cespedes only got 3 years where Kennedy got 5. Like it would be better if Cespedes got 7/75.

Even if he plays out all 3 years of this contract, he'll be 33 at his next opp and next year's OF market is Carlos Gomez, Colby Rasmus, and old Bautista and older Holliday

I get what you're saying. I don't understand WHY average pitching is getting the 5 year deals, when a difference making hitter is taking that type of deal. In my mind, Cespedes should have gotten 5 or 6 at over 20 easily. Depressed run environment and all......Most teams obviously aren't in agreement though.

I think it's easier to go into the year with a question mark in your lineup (out of 8 or 9 spots) compared to your rotation (out of 5) Add in how pitchers get injured at a much greater rate, and stability (Kennedy with all 6 major league seasons having 30+ starts) becomes a valuable asset(Keeping the Donn Roaches of the world the hell off your mound)

The Mets really walked into good fortune here as Cespedes was the last one standing. For Cespedes, he was the last one standing, so rather than take that 5 year Washington deal with deferred money (and whatever other offers were out there), taking 1 at a huge salary and getting back on the market in an overall weaker FA offseason seems like a decent bet (it's hard to imagine him not opting out ... he would need to absolutely crater to not opt out). Of course, it's hard to imagine that he'll be better than what he was in his stretch run with the Mets. I think the difficulty in finding pitching, plus teams having excess money and desperately trying to find pitching, along with the fact that Cespedes/Upton/Davis all had their warts, is probably the root factor behind why this offseason played out the way it did, however illogical it may seem at times (add in the opt out craze).

The thing that left me the most surprised was Washington missing out again. After some offseasons where Mike Rizzo seemed to make on-paper nice moves after on-paper nice moves, it's been a very quiet offseason for them. It's not the worst thing - the makings of a good rotation are still in place and he's added pen pieces to try and rebuild that unit, but they probably needed another bat or two to really look solid entering the year. Of course, they haven't moved their depth of young pitching talent, so there's pieces to move around.
