I know almost nothing about Hoppe, and here the USMNT is devoid of striker depth while he puts in a hat trick in the Bundesliga. Should be at least worth a look in Gold CUp play, no?

Hard to say, there’s a lot of interesting younger strikers and the most clear cut chance for Hoppe(U20 world cup) was cancelled. If he keeps scoring Bundesliga goals that will solve itself, but right now it’s a bizarre blender of guys behind Zardes/Jozy with Sargent, Dike, Akinola, Gioacchini, not to mention guys like Weah, Ebobisse, Vassilev, or Ferreira who could force themselves into consideration. I’m pretty confident *somebody* will take a big enough step forward to differentiate themselves and put themselves in position to unseat the current starters, but handicapping the race is impossible.

but then he has more bundesliga goals this season than Sargent, doesn't he?

Those are great goals by Hoppe for a terrible team. The finished on the first and third are fantastic and the movement and timing on the second. Schalke is going down though.

Yeah, Sargent just has the one this year. If Sargent were even in remotely decent form I’d group him with Jozy/Zardes, but he hasn’t had so much time on the national team that he can’t fall off the radar between performance issues and alternatives popping up.

I don't watch Bremen so hard to know the story on Sargent. They aren't a strong team but have done better than last year. I kind of suspect it would be good for him to move on to where he might be a better fit (totally not informed opinion but that's the sense when a striker never scores).

I don't think that price is low. Haaland may be the most valuable commodity in soccer outside perhaps Mbappe. Or is this irony?

It’s about Haaland’s bargain of a release clause ($90m) and the fact that City Group had a big role in Reyna’s development at NYCFC, they let him walk to Dortmund on a free, and if they ever want to build their American brand around him, which many people think they do, they better strike soon before he becomes an incredibly expensive transfer.

I am not a city fan, but it seems the time is right for them to grab both, while they’re already working on the Haaland deal/his personal terms.

but the release clause doesn't matter if multiple teams are willing to exceed it.

As a fan of Morris and the USMNT, I like him getting the chance to show what he can do in a format that doesn't risk him getting lost in the shuffle, though in a perfect world it wouldn't be the Championship meat grinder. As a fan of the Sounders for the next 18 months or so until STLSC gets here, that's about the worst case scenario since it leaves you much worse at your least deep position, doesn't give you resources to reinforce, and there isn't a guarantee you get Jordan back in the summer so you have to plan for several contingencies(plus he'll miss time on National team duty).

Hernán Losada is set to become the new head coach at DC United, apparently ( he was with Beerschot until today)

I don't know how good a coach he is, but it's going to be a tough job. He was hired after 4 other candidates said no because they either wanted control over coaching staff choices or were too cheap to pay reasonably.

My perception of him (he's been at newly promoted Beerschot so far this season) is that he's a good coach who's been getting results playing attacking soccer with limited talent (a bunch of Belgian 2nd stringers with a handful of fringe internationals from places like Austria, Japan and Mali). They had an excellent start to the season before the club got hit badly by a covid-19 oubreak in december - they are currently 10th.

The dude is very ambitious though.

Am I the only one who really cannot stand to see players grabbed from behind any more? I think these need to become straight reds. So cynical and ruins the game.

Timo Werner is lost unlike any elite player I’ve ever seen.

He's the soccer version of "Is Cate Blanchett good or is she just tall?"

He can feel free to find his Thor: Ragnarok anytime now.

Lost in all the Werner misses and chances killed is the fact that Kai Havertz has been very pedestrian, when he's actually been fit to play.

the german game IS different. And much more fun to watch.

It is really hilarious that they can make such a good front office move(which is replacing what should also have been a great hire in McDonough), and then make the most obvious "oh that's not gonna work at all" hire you can think of. Maybe that's being a little unfair to Neville, but also his coaching bona fides basically don't exist, so what are you gonna do.
