this would hugely impact how the teams play though - not sure that would be good. Note the hated "away goals" rule that was just abandoned.

isnt that the point?

not for me. you would give one team an unfair advantage for the 90 minutes of play. basically, you're starting the game with a 1/2 goal lead.

yeah i guess that's true. for the record im fine with PKs, i don't have the same issue with them that people who hate them do.

I don't like the penalties but I don't see better options. They are worse at youth level where someone has to be the player that misses - brutal for children.

I played keeper in high school and missed my one PK (off the right post) in a tourney game we ultimately lost after 13 tries. Wanted to die then and still want to die today. It's only been 22 years or so.

I coach my daughter's team and we went to penalties in a cup final last spring. Our best player missed when we would have won if she scored. She is already super emotional so I was just thinking we better end up winning. Happily, we did. Turns out she thought it was over before her kick and lost focus but I know she wouldn't have recovered if we had lost.

lmao this just unlocked more memories of that loss.

One PK went right down the middle but not too high. I dove to my right and kicked my left foot up and knocked the ball off the crossbar. Ref said it crossed the line though I never understood how. Another one I got too amped up and guessed right (dove left) but it was a shitty pen and I landed on it with my ribs and squirted it out into the goal. Ribs were so sore the rest of the time it hurt just getting off the ground. We went 13 rounds and I think the final was 4-3, it was our third game in three days in brutal oklahoma 100 degree heat and no one had any gas left. Lost to our GOD DAMN rivals too. I cried in the locker room for like 45 minutes at least lol.

perhaps appropriately, i dont remember any of the saves (most were just outright misses) but i do distinctly remember two of the 4 i let in lol.

I think a 48-team world cup is going to kind of suck. I mean, does the world cup need 3 non-Mexico, US, and Canada teams? Not to mention all the others from other continents. Two weeks of blah before it gets interesting and much reduced odds of the upsets we saw this year. Pretty much all tension from qualifying also gone (maybe a good thing for us!)

is it a good time to talk how terrible Fox was? Start to finish awful. Did they have a single good announcer or host?

This is triggered by the Mbappe coverage - why are there so many articles about how he is a future star? For horsefeathers's sake, he won the 2018 world cup and is already a mega-star - just because you weren't paying attention doesn't change reality.

I now support PKs after IMBs feedback in this thread.

for all the criticism of PKs, the fact that they can still make teenage dick heads cry has to mean something

The worst part of PKs for me is that it's such a guessing game. I'm sure there's reasons this is a terrible idea, but...

PKs but you have to shoot from the penalty arc instead of the spot. Give the goalie time to react, so that there's more skill involved. Make the goals feel bigger instead of the saves.

I've said it in this thread before, but to me the way you do PKs is you make all players live at the whistle. Defenders can try to get to the ball or cut off part of the goal(so no exaggerated slow run ups that don't mimic any other soccer play), and the keeper can come off his line to cut down on the angle. Most of them will still get scored, but this better represents real play(like a breakaway) and the success rate drops enough that they are less overpowered during regular play while shootouts become a little less random.

But to IMB's point as a fellow HS GK, there is nothing more satisfying than stopping a PK, every time is basically like robbing a game winning home run.

This sounds like it could still torment IMB for decades so I'm fine with it.

It was pretty bad. I remember Landon and Darke for a good 10 minutes had no idea whether Mexico or Poland would be through if the score remained the same. I think they kept saying Mexico was through on GD but in reality Poland was through on fair play. Once they realized fair play would come into play it took them another 5 minutes or so to know who had more yellows (hint: the answer is always Mexico). Then there was the whole segment when the WC started that was a promotional video for Qatar. In general the coverage was bad. I understand they have to balance between catering to hardcore soccer fans and soccer newbs but they didn't blur those lines well enough for my liking.

Landon is awful. Headed for Alexei territory.

Because I was watching on Peacock, I had the spanish announcers for the final and I enjoyed that so much more than the US announcers that I watched for the US games.

I believe the kids these days would say "skill issue fr"

Not sure if anyone was tracking Máximo Carrizo but doesn’t sound likely he chooses the US per his father:

Interesting that he responds to a comment referencing Gio but not sure that was the intention to imply anything.

They both want to play for Argentina, so good luck to them. Feel like we’re doing something right if there are duals being developed here getting looks with teams like that.

The thing that kind of sucks for internationals is that they get stuck. The teams will always take everyone they can but they may have no chance to ever see the field (I don't know anything about these two to be clear)

club soccer resumes and less than 10 minutes later it's KDB to Haaland . . .

Kane is currently on pace for 31 goals this year which is one off the EPL record for 38 games and even if he keeps up that pace he'll be lucky to finish within 10 goals of Haaland. Two more today. On pace for 51.

Haaland actually seems like a likable jock. For now, I like rooting for him because he’s a living cheat code and it’s fun to watch people scheme to stop him and fail every time. He’s got the good charismatic arrogance, not the aloof Ronaldo arrogance.

the only thing about haaland is that he's doing it for city. you're right he is just a funny looking dude who works hard and bags goals. hard to hate him. im consoling myself with the fact that 1.) city aren't currently winning the league and 2.) they likely will win the league with him or without him anyway
