I think happy Bale playing when he feels like it, golfing every day, and trying to stay fit for the cup is still going to be incredible.

And as good as Rossi was, no one has ever been better than peak Vela. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but it’s going to interesting and weird. And when the Sounders upset them again, it will be funny.

so chelsea have zeroed in on de ligt as their top CB option it looks like, and apparently are offering timo werner or pulisic to help bring the price down. juventus is said to be higher on pulisic.

You've almost certainly followed this more closely than me, but do the stories about Boehly being super hands on and insisting on American sports-style trades appear to be accurate? The english soccer internet seems to be having a lot of fun with it either way.

As for Pulisic, Juventus would be an improvement though it also has that mega-club problem where attackers hardly ever last more than 2 years unless they go supernova(see: Chelsea blowing up their attack *again*).

i think what's happening is marina left, and her and abramovich were always way more focused on never "losing" on a deal. So for instance with lukaku, they spent 100 mil, no way in hell would they have loaned him to Inter.

But none of that is Boehly's money, so he's coming in and i guess trying to give tuchel a roster he wants, which includes getting rid of deadwood and players tuchel doesnt favor. I think he's less concerned with "winning" deals that Marina brokered and more interested in just getting in some players and getting rid of others, hence the "trades"

but yeah it definitely looks like an american dude coming and being like "when is the draft"

Are transfer fees paid up front or spread out over the length of the deal? If they’re up front, that would make more sense why they’re willing to do the Lukaku deal. I’m guessing Inter is paying at least some of his yearly salary also.

I don’t know what the final deal was. They said $8 mil and add ons. His salary is like 300/w so I doubt inter is paying all of it

They're for sure not paying all of it. Similar to when Bale was loaned to Spurs by Real. I just mean if the transfer fee is paid up front, it's a lot easier to pay, say, 2/3 of his salary to play for Inter rather than 2/3 of his salary plus 1/5 of the 100M transfer fee as well. Though they might not care about that anyway as much as they care about him having a good year so they can sell him next offseason and recoup some of the transfer fee.

I really hope the Puilisic-Juve deal works out. Much slower league, they are always on the attack, and I think he'll hold up better physically over the course of a season. A Vlahovic-Chiesa-Pulisic attack would do numbers. I think it's a great fit heading into the World Cup. His worst option, IMO, would be taking a step down in the PL to a team like West Ham or Everton that isn't attacking against top teams, doesn't give him the opportunities to attack space with the ball in the final third, and he'll be the focal point of the opposing defense to stop/bully.

Plus, I'm all about efficiency with my Yanks Abroad weekend viewing. If I can knock out CP and Wes in one game? Perfect. I also like how CBS covers Serie A.

dudes are back in the Olympics. Made it look easy too. Last time ended after a terrible Michael orozco fizcal red card in the knockout round. By far the biggest difference between now and then is that every player on our youth teams have professional first touches now rather than like two guys and then 9 really good athletes with bricks for feet.

On the flip side, Mexico fails to qualify for the Olympics because of a loss to Guatemala.

EDIT: And that was the quarterfinals, and Guatemala proceeded to lose to the Dominican Republic in the semis, setting up the US-Dominican Republic final we all anticipated.

This US u20 team is dominating every opponent. Shame they didn't get a shot at Mexico, but they did play Canada, Costa Rica, Honduras and Cuba, which was effectively 4 of the top 8 teams in the region.

Paxten Aaronson is the man . . . boy. Good to dominate CONCACAF at this level. Lots of good stuff in these games.

It’s crazy that we’re watching Barca destroy themselves in real time just to sign horsefeathering mid wingers and an old striker.

I think Lewandowski is a good signing. I don't get Raphinha - they seem to sign people just to sign people some times though I guess it's hard to trust Fati to be healthy.

They’re both perfectly fine signings, but to give away future broadcast rights fee revenues to get them is absurd. You’re giving away money you will absolutely need in the future, all to finish second or third? They need to rebuild or they’ll find themselves in serious serious trouble that will end in them losing the community ownership and governance when they’re forced to sell to Disney or some horsefeathers. They’re doing what are essentially payday loans to delay the inevitable rather than just rebuilding for a few years.
