A lot of that is thanks to Bernstein and the direction they went with B&B's success.

Just having North + his guys and Murphy no longer in the daily rotation is a massive addition by subtraction.

I know Holmes isn't well-received here but he's probably the best fit next to Dan. He's smarter than the other choices and is blocked by constant athletic events in the evening. I'm waiting for it to be some bad former athlete. Olin Kruetz come on down.

Kreutz really isn't bad at all and he brings real insight into football, and not just the tertiary insight Mannelly brought.

Holmes is good, but he's too nice and doesn't have the sense of humor Terry has. He's the straight man. Terry is super goofy and just fit with Dan well. I'd like to see Holmes get paired with Goff at some point, they used to do some great stuff.

I can see McNeil lobbying for the job, but again, he's not Terry, and he could undermine Bernstein. I remember him defending North when Bernstein was going after him during a shift change.

I can't imagine them going with McNeil again especially with Bernstein. Goff and Holmes was my favorite combo at the score. They need to give Len an off-season show.

Well, McNeil has a following, and a desire to only do drive time.

If I had to pick someone out of the current obvious candidates, I'd want to hear Goff & Bernstein. Not sure that they'd do that, though. I do like Goff with Spiegel, but I think Goff and Bernstein would be better.

I'd bet between his full time gig as a highly compensated play by play man, his barely hidden disdain for stupid conversations regarding his red wings and lions on Twitter and his status as a Cubs employee, there are too many obstacles to make that happen.

He'll get some sort of kid gloves touchy feely show on whatever new network the Cubs create.

I agree with this. I like Holmes just not with Dan. I definitely think Goff and Bernstein would be a good fit

This is my choice. And put Rozner with Spiegel. I think Rozner is a ton of fun to listen to, even when he's wrong.

Anyone who understands math?

1/3 of teams in MLB playoffs vs 1/32 of FBS teams in their playoff. To achieve the 1/3 mark there would have to be a 42 team CFB playoff.

^BTW, this seems to me like a terrible idea. i'd never pay $10 a month for local sports writing, and i'm a pretty avid local sports fan. there's more than enough free quality content out there.

it's $10? That's nuts.

yup

compared to what people pay for like netflix, it seems insane

btw, still think it's dumb but at least it looks like they've lowered their rate...$5 a month monthly or $40 for the year.

I don't really get why the $2.1m is being touted in the article as if it's some sort of justification that The Athletic is a good idea. That kind of money is peanuts in the VC world.

Back-of-the-envelope, I can imagine that it would be incredibly difficult for them to become profitable (people don't like paying, it's probably not that good, people can share subscriptions/email content for free), and given that the audience is likely non-differentiated from the usual sports media consumption crowd and since the access/content/talent are not measurably better than what's at newspapers, I can't see this being a wise acquisition, either.

With that said, I can't blame Greenberg, Powers, and Sharma for giving it a shot. Writing sports content for a newspaper must suck.

FWIW, I've never seen the Athletic advertised at $10/month. It's always been between $2+ and $5 from the modals they put on articles. If I cared about any Chicago teams besides the Cubs I'd probably subscribe, they make sure to have an extremely high signal to noise ratio.

i am almost positive it launched at $10 a month (for the monthly pay option)

this is the closest thing i can find to evidence

Yep, Goff is perfect to pair with Dan. He'll challenge Dan. It should be interesting, because Terry was such a yes-man for Dan.

Why do people assume Dan needs to be challenged?

If Terry was a hype man then he was an ingenious one. That show destroyed the afternoon saloon.

Probably because a show where Dan has someone that will actually take a stance against some of his opinions is a show I'd be more interested in listening to.

I've been listening to Carmen and Jurkos podcasts lately and have generally been entertained. Should I switch to Bernstein?

I'm assuming they have a podcast.

They package the show into a podcast after it's aired. It really just depends on your taste though.
