On opening day this April, there were 25 players 18 or younger in low-A across baseball. 12 of those guys are now 19 and we've  added Ethan Salas, Josue de Paula and Jefferson Rojas to A-ball (not sure if any others have been added in season) so that means at least 16 currently.

Yes it's a whole new ball game without short-season A as an option.  Teams have less need to draft organizational college players to play along prospects in short-season A thus more opportunities for International Prospects to get their feet wet as 18 and 19 year olds in full-season ball.  Makes more sense to draft additional arms and hope they can be turned into pitchers in various pitching labs ... and if the complex leagues disappear next summer ...

5. D.J. Herz, LHP, Cubs
Team: Double-A Tennessee (Southern)
Age: 22

Why He’s Here: 0-0, 0.90, 10 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 14 SO, 0 HR

The Scoop: Herz has long struggled to throw strikes, but when he does, he’s difficult to hit. The 22-year old lefthander delivered back-to-back excellent starts against Birmingham last week. He pitched five scoreless innings with two walks allowed and nine strikeouts in the series opener and followed with five innings, one run allowed, one walk and five strikeouts in the finale. The five innings represented Herz’s season-high, and were a big step forward as he looks to improve his pitch efficiency to last deeper into games. (KG)

HELIUM

Jefferson Rojas, SS, Cubs

When Rojas signed with Chicago in 2022, he had the look of a hit-first infielder with excellent power potential depending on how his frame filled out. This spring, he had scouts buzzing during extended spring training, and the team itself showed its belief in Rojas by bumping him to Low-A after just one game in the Arizona Complex League. Now at Myrtle Beach, Rojas has caught fire. He’s 11-for-34 to start his tenure in Low-A, including four doubles and a home run. He also had a run of four straight two-hit games. It’s early, but the arrow is pointing up on Rojas. (JN)

Have we had guys younger than Moises in high-A?

  1. I think he's a few months younger than Caissie was when he broke with South Bend last year.
  2. Younger than Triantos, or Alcantara or PCA for their South Bend debuts.
  3. I think the immortal Aramis Ademan was some months older when he began at high-A, too.  (I like to remember Aramis as a reminder that being super young for a league is nice, but only if you're good and you keep getting better, neither of which were true for him.)
  4. Gleyber Torres, was he maybe the last hitter younger than Moises to hit A+?

I'm pleased with Ferris' performance so far, but in what way is it anywhere close to what Horton is doing in South Bend.

Maybe giving a big nod to age since he's 19 and doing this in full season ball already vs a college draftee?

Gotta be careful with stuff like FB% when there's such a stark difference in balls in play.  At South Bend, Horton(who is down to 42% after last night) has given up 3.6 FB per start, or 0.9 per IP. Gallardo, despite a 36% FB%, is giving up 5.2 FB per start and a shade over 1.0 per IP

I don’t agree (I mean, Horton is showing TOR potential) with him but this is what he said:

I'm guessing Futures Game announcement tonight.

Makes more sense and makes me cry thinking about Davis a few years ago.
