BA’s Hot Sheet (20 hottest prospects last week):

Quote

15. Matt Shaw, SS, Cubs
Team: High-A South Bend (Midwest)
Age: 21

Why He’s Here: .435/.435/.870 (10-for-23), 5 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 6 RBIs, 0 BB, 5 SO, 0-for-0 SB

The Scoop: Shaw has taken to his surroundings in the Midwest League right out of the blocks and enjoyed a notable first full week with South Bend. The Cubs first-round pick in 2023, Shaw collected a hit in all five games last week. He had multi-hit efforts on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. His standout game of the week came on Thursday as he finished a double short of the cycle. Shaw was one of the top college hitters in this summer’s draft. After winning the Cape Cod League MVP award in 2022, Shaw enjoyed another standout season at Maryland in 2023. The shortstop is likely to move to second base long term, but his combination of contact, approach, power and speed drive his profile. (GP)

Quite a few 2023 first round bats made the list - Crews at 3, Teel at 6, Shaw at 15 and Braden Taylor at 18.

Jordan Nwogu made BA’s Hot Sheet as one of the 20 hottest prospects last week: https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/hot-sheet-baseballs-20-hottest-prospects-from-the-past-week-8-22-23/

Quote

8. Jordan Nwogu, OF, Cubs
Team: Double-A Tennessee (Southern)
Age: 24

Why He’s Here: .529/.556/1.177 (9-for-17), 5 R, 2 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 5 RBIs, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0-for-1 SB

The Scoop: Nwogu has struggled badly this season, but he had a week to remember in Tennessee’s series against Rocket City last week. The 2020 third-rounder recorded a hit in five straight games, had a two-homer day on Aug. 18 and added another home run in the series finale on Sunday. It was the highlight of what has been a recent improvement for Nwogu. After batting just .155/.246/.310 through the first three months of the season, he is batting .246/.317/.500 since the start of July. (KG)

It is unfortunate, but I wonder how far away we are from a Brennen Davis DFA.  There was still some hope going into this season, but it's appears now that he might be finished as a serious prospect.  With the upcoming roster crunch, is it really worth dedicating a 40 man spot to him after this season?

I don’t think the 40-situation is that bad and with injury success stories from Alzolay, Amaya and Steele (and Canario?) and Davis’ prior highs, I can’t imagine they’re that willing to take Brennen off the 40-man this quickly.

BA’s Hot Sheet with 2 Cubs prospects: Alexander Canario the hottest prospect in all of baseball last week and Matt Shaw makes the list for the second time in three weeks.

Quote

1. Alexander Canario, OF, Cubs
Team: Triple-A Iowa (International)
Age: 23

Why He’s Here: .458/.462/1.125 (11-for-24), 5 R, 4 2B, 0 3B, 4 HR, 8 RBIs, 1 BB, 8 SO

The Scoop: Canario has lost a chunk of this season due to injury, but he’s making up for lost time. The former Giants prospect clubbed four home runs this past week, continuing what has been a white-hot August. In the season’s penultimate month, Canario is hitting .326/.379/.684 with seven of the nine home runs he’s hit all season. (JN)

10. Matt Shaw, SS, Cubs
Team: High-A South Bend (Midwest)
Age: 21

Why He’s Here: .476/.522/.905 (10-for-21), 6 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 8 RBIs, 1 BB, 2 SO, 2-for-3 SB

The Scoop: So far, so good for the Cubs’ first-round selection out of Maryland. Shaw skipped Low-A and instead headed directly to High-A South Bend after a brief tuneup in the ACL. In 20 games in the Midwest League, he’s done a little bit of everything. He has four home runs—including two this past week—and seven stolen bases in eight chances. His addition gives the Cubs another middle-diamond talent in a system that is clearly on the rise. (JN)

The new board looks great, just came across it.

The minor league talk looks as good as everl, and it appears there's actually quality Cub talk back on the general board- nice!

For the season, I'm really enjoying this team. The funnest its been since 2017.

For the minor leagues. Also really fun.

Such a deep group. Excellent prospects throughout the system.  Can't be more jacked about the last two 1st rounders.

Horton has to be the best pitching prospect since Prior, and Shaw is just blowing through the system. When I was a kid I remember Lance Dickson getting to the Show the year he was drafted, and it all endeed in his 3rd or 4th start when a come backer took out one of his knees- ugh. I don't think he pitched in the majors again.

3. Luis Verdugo, 3B, Cubs

Team: High-A South Bend (Midwest)

Age: 22

Why He’s Here: .522/.593/1.000 (12-for-23), 8 R, 5 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 7 RBIs, 4 BB, 3 SO, 1-for-1 SB

The Scoop: Verdugo had a difficult season, but he progressively got better every month and finished the season with a flourish. The 22-year-old Mexico native went off versus Quad Cities in the final series of the regular season, racking up a hit in every game but one and recording three multi-hit efforts. He went 3-for-5 in the series opener, 5-for-6 with two doubles and a homer the next game and finished the series with a hit in each of the final three games. After batting .144 with a .405 OPS from April-June, Verdugo hit .322 with a .958 OPS from July-September. (KG)

No. 6 Kevin Alcantara, OF, Cubs

Team: High-A South Bend (Midwest)

Age: 21

Why He’s Here: .556/.591/.944 (10-for-18), 7 R, 4 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 10 RBIs, 3 BB, 3 SO, 1-for-1 SB

The Scoop: Alcantara closed his 2023 season on a high note in the Midwest League’s year-end series against Quad Cities. Over the course of the week, he smacked his 12th home run of the season and added 15th stolen base. In doing so he became one of just 15 minor leaguers 21 years old or younger with 25 or more doubles, a dozen or more home runs and 15 or more stolen bags. The feat becomes more impressive when you realize he accomplished it in 414 at-bats, which was 67 fewer at-bats than anyone else on the list. (JN)

16. Christian Franklin, OF, Cubs

Team: High-A South Bend (Midwest)

Age: 23

Why He’s Here: .438/.565/.688 (7-for-16) 8 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBIs, 5 BB, 5 SO, 2 SB.

The Scoop: Going back to his days at Arkansas, Franklin has always known how to draw a walk, but he’s also faced concerns about his passive approach. The craziest stat of Franklin’s season may be that his three-hit game this week is his first of the season. Franklin has six games this year where he’s reached base four times in a game, but every one of them has had as many hit-by-pitches and walks as hits. Franklin has been moved to left and right field full-time in the past month, but his ability to play all three outfield spots as well as that lofty OBP is his path to the big leagues. (JC)

4. Owen Caissie, OF, Cubs

Team: Double-A Tennessee (Southern)
Age: 21
Why He’s Here: .471/.526/.765 (8-for-17), 3 R, 2 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 5 RBIs, 2 BB, 2 SO, 1-for-1 SB
The Scoop: When the Southern League used the experimental, pre-tacked baseball, Caissie struck out 105 times in 310 plate appearances (33.8%). Since the regular, mud-rubbed ball was put back in play on July 14, he has struck out 59 times in 218 plate appearances (27.1%). In other words, there’s more Joy in Cubville, because the Mighty Caissie hasn’t struck out as often. He’s also one of 11 players 21 years old or younger who have hit 20 or more home runs while playing exclusively at the upper levels of the minor leagues. (JN)

I can't believe BJMJr is getting slighted like this!

On an actual note, I would have gone with Caissie as POY, too.

A big thank you to Raisin for doing what you do to keep this area going. I'm sure everyone appreciates it as much as I do.
