I read the except of Connor Cook's scouting report and now I want the Bears to draft him in the 2nd round so that he and Jay form some sort of glorious Voltron of passive aggressive indifference.

Anyone want to bend the rules a little and post the Bears excerpt?

3. Chicago Bears: Leonard Floyd, OLB, Georgia (No. 9 pick)

Knowing the draft is one thing; manipulating it to your advantage is another. Bears GM Ryan Pace and director of college scouting Joe Douglas did a masterful job of trading up to No. 9, knowing that Floyd would be off the board by the time they selected at 11. Floyd is the perfect fit for what the Bears need -- a 3-4 OLB with versatility.

Quick side note on this: The Bears trading up put the Giants in a really tough spot. Based on our information, the two guys they were targeting at No. 10 -- Floyd and Conklin -- were both swept out from under their feet with two teams trading up ahead of them.

5 of the 6 "best picks" were top 10 (with Rankins at 12 being the sixth), while 2 of the 3 "riskiest" were 26 and 29 (plus Hargreaves at 11).

That makes no sense. Denver taking Lynch wasn't any more risky than the two teams that took QBs much earlier, or just about any other pick. They took a QB late in the 1st after winning a super bowl. They can afford to be patient with him and that is pretty much what everybody says he needed.

I'm not taking issue with any of what you say (I didn't really care about the risky/best classification anyway...just wanted to see the analysis/info on Floyd) nor do I disagree with any of it except this part. What does that matter? They won a Super Bowl, yes, but their starting QB retired, their other one left via FA. How can they really afford to be patient when they don't really have a quarterback?

Or are you just saying they have license to suck for a bit if they have to because they just won one?

9. Chicago Bears (from Tampa Bay Buccaneers) – Leonard Floyd, DE/OLB, Georgia: The draft's hometown team jumps up two slots in a trade with Tampa Bay to snag Floyd, an athletic if slight (6-6, 244) pass rusher. Floyd has explosive moves and should nicely complement the Bears' other outside backer, Pernell McPhee, a major free-agent acquisition a year ago who's more stout against the run. But Floyd is the kind of pressure player who is imperative for a team that only had 35 sacks in 2015 and knows it must disrupt Aaron Rodgers to claw back to the top of the NFC North standings.

What does it matter? Seriously? What does winning the Super Bowl last year matter?

They won the super bowl last year. The pressure is off for 2016, at least. There is no desperate need to shove a guy who isn't ready into the starting lineup. Desperate teams who trade up into the first to take a QB they need to start right away are taking a risk. Nobody has their job on the line.

If Floyd turns out to be a solid pick, the Bears are pretty set with 6 of their front 7 on defense (the 2nd DE spot is still up in the air between Unrein, Ferguson and Sutton).

The back end is still a work in progress, but if Amos progresses from last year and Fuller gets a little more consistent, it should hold its own, especially if our LBs are getting pressure on QBs.

And while I don't necessarily think its a sure thing we keep all those guys, we have some solid depth behind many of those guys.

I really like what we've done to rebuild the defense in basically 2 years and think it could be a strength next year.

It better be a strength because they won't be lighting up the scoreboard.

What is the front 7 depth right now?

No, I didn't say they have a license to suck.

I said they have no pressure to shove a rookie QB into the starting lineup right away. A Super Bowl win buys you time.

It just seems like throwing a rookie QB on a team that just won the SB but suddenly has no QB at all isn't exactly a clear cut low pressure scenario.

The 2 losers of the Unrein, Ferguson and Sutton battle. Ferguson and Sutton still have projectability left IMO. Houston who came on strong towards the end of the year, Willie Young, Acho and Christian Jones are solid depth.

I get your point that they are ignoring the offense. It is a concern for me too, but a solid defense goes a long way to building a good football team, and its not like our offense is like 2000-2004 where there are absolutely no playmakers with garbage QBs. I do think we are going to struggle running the ball next year though and that concerns me.

If the line is OK (right side should be substantially upgraded) and zach miller plays most of the year, i think the offense will at least be average. could be more depending on how good white really is. if white is really good, then that's a hell of a WR combo. if he's just OK, it's still pretty good. if he's trash, then, yeah, we probably don't score much.

i guess alshon's health is a question too. he did play 2 full seasons before last year.

That's a bizarre way of thinking.

They do have pretty much the definition of the blah game manager at QB in Sanchez, who is good for a laugh but could easily replicate what Denver has been getting from the position.

What is the front 7 depth right now?

DE- Hicks- Unrein

NT- Goldman-Gaston

DE- Ferguson- Sutton-Washington

OLB- Floyd/Young/Houston - Acho

ILB- Trevanthan - Jones

ILB- Freeman- Timu - Anderson

OLB - McPhee- Floyd/Young/Houston

That's everyone of significance; another half dozen future contract guys and the like. I actually would bet on at least one of those three Emery guys at DE to figure it out, but more depth and competition is needed.

FYI I was asking about the defensive depth because I don't remember all the names right now. Like, can somebody draw up a theoretical line/lb depth chart?

Floyd was just on Speigell and Goff and gave really awkward nervous 5 word answers, they were giving it to him pretty hard off the air. Not that I would've been any different.

Yea I haven't seen or heard any interview with him where he seems comfortable. Pace was raving about his personality in his interview last night though. Guess he's just an awkward interview for now at least.
