Hill would be cool as the new Travis Wood with a bit more upside if he was forced into a starting role, but it would surprise me if 1) the Cubs guaranteed him a rotation spot and 2) that Hill would sign this early without a guarantee of a rotation spot.

rich hill feels like such a good bet to either be really good or flame out immediately that i kind of wonder if you could go ahead and "guarantee" him a rotation spot with the knowledge that if it turns out you don't want him in the rotation, he's going to be so bad that no one is going to give you any trouble for going back on your promise. give him hammel's spot and have jason in the wood role to start the season.

i would love to sign rich hill because i always liked him and it is fun that he is good again, but it just seems like such a long-shot that this actually works for any length of time. on a one-year deal, though, who cares sign him.

This. At the very least he's great rotation depth at that kind of price. Do it.

Happy for the guy. One more nice pay day on a career that could have been over a dozen times.

According to BBR, it's his first nice payday. He made 725K and 1mm in ''12 and '13 and $400-445 K in each of '07-'09 (ok, all nice paydays for me, but you know,) and those were the only years he made big league pay. 6mm must be one hell of a thrill for him, especially parlaying it out of just 4 games in 2015.

damnit i wanted OPR :(

if we weren't poor and could afford that without risking throwing 1/5 of price/heyward/greinke's salary away, i bet we would've done it

No one is going to trade for the right to pay Wood $7M.

For us it's either overpay him to be a reliever and rotation depth, or let him walk. I vote the former.

I just went to Rich Hill's baseball reference page and I find it odd that he is pictured there with a Nationals cap on despite never playing a regular season game for them. I get that he was in their minors system for the better part of a year between 2014-2015 and probably played in spring training games for them...just odd to see regardless.

It'd be like going to Hideo Nomo's page and seeing him with a Cubs cap on. Or Kevin Millar.
