Growing sentiment around Baseball and internally with the @marlins is Jose Fernandez will be traded this offseason.

I just wonder if they'll demand that any return they get to have mlb ready pitching in return.

And I don't mean Hammel.

I spent a good chunk of the last 2 days watching recent games of Teheran, Miller, Ross, Salazar, Carrasco, Samardzija, Zimmermann and Price. (and a lot of Jason Heyward defensive highlights). #NotAScout, but you might find my musings interesting:

I have determined that I would not like to trade Soler for either of the Atlanta guys. Teheran is especially unimpressive - low-90s velocity, underwhelming command, fly balls and hard contact, and his changeup does not look swing-and-miss. His slider gets a fair amount of whiffs but it doesn't look THAT great, and it depends on being set up by the other stuff. (and this was his *best* game in September)

The Cleveland guys both look awesome and I want them so bad. I don't think Baez would be nearly enough, but it if was I'd do it in a heartbeat. I'm definitely open to adding significantly more value (from the farm) on top of Baez for either of these guys - with slight edge to Carrasco.

Ross looks very very good as well. His numbers are outstanding across the board (except for walks, but he gets tons of grounders and few HRs), and his stuff makes it clear why. Truly dominating hard sinker and slider. For as great as his numbers are, he has a reputation among meatballs of being "not a winner," so hopefully that brings his price down. And of course with just 2 years of control, he's not as tantalizing as the Cleveland guys. But I would absolutely trade Baez for him. (And as a San Diego resident, I'd love to watch Baez be the featured SS here).

Price is obviously awesome and it is super cool that everyone thinks he favors us. I'd be all kinds of stoked to have him. But of the expected mega-contracts, I think Heyward will pay off more over the life of the contract. Huge boost to our defense, contact and speed - and possible untapped power to unlock. I would not be opposed to giving him 200/8 with an opt out after 4, if that's what it takes.

So among the 2nd tier pitchers, I'm really enamored with Shark if the market is as soft as MLBTR and fangraphs think it might be. I'd start the offer at 64/4 and be willing to go up to 90/5. Hell, maybe more if the market proves strong. He is a supreme athlete with not a lot of miles on his arm, and I think he is fixable. For some reason he became an extreme fly ball pitcher last year and his slider & splitter lost effectiveness, but there's nothing wrong with his arm. His mechanics did look different than with the Cubs in 2014. Lots of potential value here, I think.

Zimmerman will be more expensive and seems to carry more injury risk, but he is obviously very good. Good stuff, good command, and if there is really much of a thing as twtw, he has it. Would not mind him at all, but I think there's more value in Samardzija.

I mean I know they won't be headliners but including Hendricks and Edwards as 3rd and 4th pieces in a trade may be enough pitching for them, especially if the lead pieces are some combo of Soler, Baez, Mckinney, Contreras, Almora, Torres, etc.

I think I would absolutely do a Soler/Contreras/Hendricks/Edwards trade for Fernandez and Ozuna.

I'm in line with most all of that, though I don't think Teheran is *that* unimpressive.

Hendricks? There may even be a few teams that'd attempt to make CJ a starter. I'll bring it up again though, a package of Javy and Soler would be tough for teams to beat and it'd be a possible marketing dream for the Marlins.

As long as someone guarantees me that we sign Heyward and a couple pitchers to go along with this, I'm in.

I really, really don't want to give up both guys in a single trade.

From the pure standpoint at looking at his velocity on Fangraphs it seems pretty unimpressive. I know there is more to it than velocity but he seems to be more of a guy, like Hendricks, who needs pinpoint command/control of his pitches to be effective because the raw stuff isn't overpowering.

His stuff is good enough to have a mid-3's FIP in two of the past three years. He's also signed to a really team friendly contract through 2019 with a 2020 club option. But getting him is addressing the middle to bottom of the rotation instead of adding to the top.

Normally I wouldn't want to give up both in one deal, but for Fernandez and Ozuna I think it might be worth it.

Fernandez or Syndergaard are about the only two (non-Kershaw) pitchers for whom I would be ok seeing Soler be traded. I think Soler will be a 30+ homer, 100 walk guy in two years.

Fernandez is probably the only guy I don't think too long about before including Soler in a deal / Wouldn't give up Baez in the same deal though.

in the last 3 years, there have been 4 total seasons of guys doing that. two from bautista, one from harper and one from goldschmidt. i don't think this is gonna happen.

We know he has the power and he has a fantastic eye at the plate. If he can learn to lay off some sliders low and away, he could be the best hitter on this team.

Good God, it's like a little kid stomping his feet, holding his breath and [expletive] until he gets his way. We all know you like Aroldis Chapman as a [expletive] starter. There's literally zero reason to keep trying to push him down people's throats.

So in other words, his most recent quote says he still just wants to close. Which I could see why he doesn't want to make such a drastic change in the year before he gets his payday. The author argues he could get an extra $50 million as a starter, but still expects him to throw 103 mph and not blow his arm out.

And I'd argue his payday is going to be north of the $50 million cap the author currently suggests it's at.

His most recent quote was him being a good employee. He didn't just change his mind and not want to be a starter again within a handful of months for no reason.

Other than failing or getting hurt right before his big payday.
