There's actually people out there who don't want Strop back or think it's no big deal if he isn't? WTF

No people, just Felix

My parents don't know jack about FIP or anything like that, and so they despise Strop. I'm sure they are not alone. What I don't understand is why people can't identify that his stuff is [expletive] filthy. Nearly Marmol in his prime unhittable when he's right.

dude had an ERA in the 2s with a WHIP of 1...it's not like you need to be well versed in metrics to know he's good

But he blew a game against the Cardinals, which rends your argument invalid.

Any chance we're in on this?

Peter Gammons has heard from four different people that Aroldis Chapman will be traded by the end of the weekend.

A major rebuild is about to begin for the Reds, with Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce also reportedly on the block. Joey Votto and Todd Frazier could be moved too if the return package is right. Chapman has been one of the most dominant relievers in Major League Baseball since arriving from Cuba in 2010, boasting a 2.17 ERA and 546 strikeouts in 319 career innings. He's probably drawing interest from well over a dozen teams.

does anyone here have any thoughts on if he could be converted to a starter?

#Cubs | From the Wire: Cubs Sign RHP Andury Acevedo https://t.co/ZWeRcw0FY6 #MLB

Seems like an interesting pick up. To give him a 40 man spot shows we must think pretty highly of him.

We still have fluff we can take off of the 40 man to make room, but there's not nearly as much as there used to be.

I think Mooney gets a little carried away thinking that Acevedo or Leathersich are linchpins to next year's pen or emblematic of the types of additions they'd like to make, but the quotes from Theo are enlightening:

“Adding to the bullpen – including possibly investing in a salaried reliever – is on the list of things that we would like to do to improve the club,” Epstein said. “But you have to prioritize, too. We’re not going to be able to accomplish everything that we want to do this winter. We just don’t have the means to do it all. No club really does, so we have to prioritize.

“It just happens to be a poor supply/demand dynamic this year for free-agent relievers, so I don’t necessarily think we’re going to talk our way into a really reasonable contract for a reliever. We’ll see. Especially considering that we really prefer to allocate the resources that we have to starting pitching and some other areas.”

“By no means are we going to ignore the ‘pen,” Epstein said. “I just think we may look to add talent (through) some of the routes that we’ve used in the past to find quality relievers – the Rule 5 draft, minor-league free agency, smaller trades, buy-low scenarios.

“That might be more likely than investing a reliever, even though we’d be open to it. It was one of the things we talked about all year: ‘Hey, this might be a good offseason to invest in a reliever.’ But the reality is we can’t do that and preclude a shot at the starter that we need.”

So, so far this offseason we have added:

Andury Acevedo

Rex Brothers

Ryan Cook

Jack Leathersich

Spencer Patton

to go along with:

Rondon

Strop

Grimm

-----------

Wood

Richard

-----------

Ramirez

Edwards

-----------

Medina

Rosscup

I'm sure we'll make additional waiver wire pickups (and lose guys from the list above that way, too). I would have loved to have found a way to add O'Day, but I don't think the front office is going in that direction. Given the hints that there is only around $20-30M to spend this offseason, how many feel like we should make an additional big move or two in the bullpen this offseason?

Other than the bombadil, of course.

I think they should still add another bullpen arm that's guaranteed an MLB role(e.g. not a waiver flier), but it doesn't need to be some stud. Someone like Grilli or Dunn in trade, or even one of our own FAs like Cahill, Rodney, or Hunter. They don't need to be penciled in for the 7th or 8th innings, but I think we need one more arm that we can at least have a little more certainty about than the waiver claims. Maybe that undersells how much they believe in someone like Cook or Patton, but as long as the cost is low enough that you can quickly cut bait, it seems like the depth is win-win. If they want to go for someone better(McGee is my personal favorite) that's cool with me too, but if 140 is the high end of the payroll that might be a difficult hill to climb with other offseason priorities.

If we could get Grilli in the deal, I'd be a lot more excited about a trade with Atlanta. I think he flies a bit under the radar as a dominant reliever.

I think we can get by with what is there now if there is confidence in the health of guys like Ramirez & Cook. But I sure would be happy if we added another healthy arm that could slot somewhere in the important part of the pen.

Yeah, I think one more addition is what we get, likely a small one. Throw in via trade probably. Between Cook and Brothers, I think we'll get a good showing out of one. Personally, I think CJ is going to be a big piece in the pen next year. Wood being tendered or not may help tell us a bit more. But Theo has said he doesn't see them putting money into the pen this off season and I believe him, as it comes in behind SP and CF on the needs list.
