The only plausible reason I can think of is the need for an extra catcher on the roster, which would indicate either Montero or Ross is hurt.

Yes this...I cannot see any other reason to make the move now. I saw multiple interviews with Ross yesterday, he didn't seem to be hurt.

I don't think Schwarber was THAT awful behind the plate that I'd be willing to go with Teagarden over him if need be. I mean, I'd rather he be the backup than Ross too, but ya know.

 

And as far as securing him for next year's roster depth before he becomes a FA, it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that Contreras is getting added in the offseason right? Do we really need 4.5 spots taken by catchers?

Can Teagarden be added to a future series roster because he was on the 40 man earlier in the season? If so then that makes a little sense, I can see the logic of always wanting 3 guys on the roster who can catch, especially considering one of them is Schwarber. Rosscup would be added to the roster if anything happened to Richard or Wood and even after that they'd probably just go with one lefty and bring in Motte/Edwards instead of Wada.

 

If not, then best guess is it's keeping a promise to either Wada or Teagarden for some purpose that isn't immediately obvious to me.

This would have made more sense after the Pittsburgh game in the event that Ross got suspended.

Right. Seems to me to be a procedural thing unrelated to playoff status, but who the hell knows.
